PROVO, Utah- The Idaho State softball team earned its first ever road win over BYU on Friday night. The Bengals withstood a Cougar rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 6-4 victory at Gail Miller Field. Idaho State improves its record to 19-12 while BYU dropped to 11-19.
"BYU is a great team," Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. "To beat them is a big deal for us. Gordon (Eakin) always puts great teams on the field year in and year out. They are always good and very well coached. For us to out duel him in such a close game where all the little things mattered, I was very pleased."
Haley Douglas improved to 12-7 in the circle and
Bailey Foster picked up the save. Foster loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh but got out of the jam when
Katelyn Marquez made two great catches in center field to preserve the victory.
"Both of them got themselves in and out of trouble today," Wright said. "That is the sign of a lot of great progress. We attribute a lot of that to
Jessica Moore and what she has done with the staff. For Bailey and Hailey to get themselves out of trouble and hang in there was a really big deal."
Idaho State and BYU each had seven hits.
Terah Blackwell was one-for-two with two RBIs and one run scored.
Micheala Taylor and
Kacie Burnett each scored two runs and both were walked twice. Seven different Bengals had hits in the game.
Douglas pitched six innings, allowed six hits, four runs and struck out four while Foster allowed one hit and walked two in the seventh inning.
The Bengals put two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. Taylor and Burnett each walked to start the game and
Vicky Galasso followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners. Blackwell then singled home Taylor and Burnett to give ISU a 2-0 lead.
BYU scored a run in the bottom of the first and added two runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead. ISU regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Marquez led off with a single and Taylor followed with a walk. With one out, Galasso had an RBI single to center field and Taylor would later score on a wild pitch.
BYU tied the game at four in the bottom half of the inning but ISU scored two runs in the seventh to take the 6-4 lead. Burnett started the inning by reaching base on a bunt. Then with one out and two runners on base, Breakwell doubled home what would be the winning run to give ISU the 5-4 lead. Later in the inning,
Maddy Hickman hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Blackwell.
In the bottom of the seventh, BYU loaded the bases with one out before Foster earned her second save of the season.
The Cougars and Bengals conclude the series on Saturday, March 29, with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
