Bengals Fall In OT, 78-74, To Portland State

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit to force overtime but the rally wasn't enough as Portland State earned a 78-74 win over the Bengals. The Bengals ended the season 11-18 and 8-12 in Big Sky Conference play. Portland State improved to 16-13 and 11-9 in league.

Tomas Sanchez scored 22 points in his final game as a Bengal. Jeffrey Solarin was a perfect nine-for-nine from the field and scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

"He took good shots and took shots he can make," Idaho State coach Bill Evans said on Solarin. "He is a good listener."

Chris Hansen scored 18 points.

Idaho State shot 44.1 percent for the game and the Vikings shot 47 percent. The Bengals out rebounded PSU 41-38. ISU had 16 assists but turned the ball over 16 times. Portland State had 19 assists to 11 turnovers.

The Bengals made 16-27 free throws and six 3-pointers on 17 attempts.

With 14:02 left in the game the Vikings led ISU 49-37. Idaho State then went on a 20-4 run to take a 57-53 lead with 8:43 left in the game after a 3-pointer by Hansen.  Solarin scored seven of his 19 points during the run.

Idaho State led 65-63 late but the Vikings scored with 13 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime.

"Our guys played hard and Portland State played hard," Evans said. "We had a chance to win it and didn't. The Vikings made a big play to send the game to overtime."

Hansen made a free throw in the opening minute of the extra stanza to put ISU on top 66-65. Portland State then took a three-point lead on several different occasions and the Bengals were unable to take the lead the rest of the way.
