Bengals Split with First-Place Hornets

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Idaho State Bengal softball team split its conference home-opening doubleheader with Sacramento State Friday at Miller Ranch Stadium. The Bengals fell 9-3 in the first game but won 6-5 on a Hailey Breakwell walk-off home run in the second game.
 
Breakwell and Kacie Burnett tallied home runs in the second game. Gabby Lopez, Burnett and Katee Wiley each had two RBIs to lead ISU in the two games Friday.
 
Jessica Tolmie (4-2) allowed three hits and no runs in four innings of relief to earn the win in the second game.
 
Haley Douglas (13-10) allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs in the game one loss.
 
Sacramento State 9, Idaho State 3
The Hornets scored six runs in the first two innings to take a commanding lead and held on for the 9-3 win over ISU.
 
Sac State scored again in the top of the fourth before the Bengals got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning.
 
Micheala Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Breakwell. Michaela Barr also scored in the fourth when Gabby Lopez singled to left field.
 
The Hornets answered with a run in the top of the fifth to take a 9-2 lead.
 
The Bengals added their final run in the seventh when Wiley reached on an error to score Breakwell.
 
Idaho State 6, Sacramento State 5
Idaho State came from behind to defeat Sacramento State in the second game of the double header.
 
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning but the Bengals answered in the bottom of the inning when Hickman scored on a Wiley single to tie the game at one.
 
Sac State took a 5-1 lead with four runs in the top of the third.
 
Tolmie replaced Bailey Foster in the top of the fourth inning and held the Hornets scoreless for the rest of the game.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bengals added four runs to tie the game. Burnett tallied her first career home run to score Katelyn Marquez.
 
Two batters later Breakwell singled and Sarah Hayes scored. The Bengals then loaded the bases and Lopez was walked to score Breakwell.
 
In the bottom of the seventh inning Breakwell hit a leadoff, walk off home run to give ISU the win.
 
The rubber match of the series takes place tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Bengals will also reveal their 2013 championship banner just before the first pitch. After the game the team will sign autographs in the field.
