POCATELLO, Idaho-The Idaho State soccer team heads to California for its final two non-conference games of the season. The Bengals take on Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, September 18, before traveling to play No. 20 San Diego State on Sunday, September 21.
ISU is coming off a come from behind, 5-4, victory over Hawaii which saw
Allison Gibson's squad recover twice from two goal deficits. It's the first time since 2011 the Bengals have won the game after trailing at halftime and only the fourth time in
Allison Gibson's coaching career at ISU.
Amanda Ellsworth notched the game tying and winning goals as part of just the second hat trick in school history. The senior forward was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts.
Ellsworth leads the Big Sky Conference in both goals with six and points with 13. Teammate
Maria Sanchez is second in the conference in both of those categories while also ranking third in assists. She has scored a goal in four of the five games this season.
Idaho State has scored the most goals in the Big Sky with 13.
This is the beginning of a four consecutive games away from Pocatello.
Scouting Cal State FullertonThe Titans play in the Big West Conference and enter the game with a record of 1-5-2. They have scored seven goals by seven different players over their eight games. Sophomore Jennifer Staurt and freshman Morgan Bertsch have split time at goalkeeper.
The Bengals lead the overall series 1-0-1. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in 2007 while ISU picked up the only victory in the series with a 2-0 win at Fullerton in 2000.
Scouting San Diego StateThe Aztecs enter the week on a three game winning streak and ranked No. 20 in the nation. They will be the fourth Mountain West Conference opponent the Bengals have played this season. They are 1-2 in those matches.
SDSU is led on offense by Angela Mitchell who has scored three goals in six games. They also have the reigning conference player of the week on offense and defense in true freshman Aliyah Utush and Stacie Moran. On defense the Aztecs surrender fewer than two goals per game. Melanie Vaughn is the keeper with the most playing time.
This will be the first time Idaho State and San Diego State have faced each other.
