Box Score 2 OREM, Utah- The Idaho State Volleyball team capped a dominant weekend by winning the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational in Orem Utah. ISU dropped just one set in the entire tournament and improved to 6-7 on the season.
The Bengals defeated host Utah Valley on Friday night before downing Portland and UC Riverside on Saturday.
Kylee Sessions was named MVP of the tournament while
Whitney Bartschi-Harrington and
Hayley Farrer made the all-tournament team.
"It was great to win the three matches," Head Coach
Chad Teichert said. "At times we played really well especially against Utah Valley where we played well throughout the match."
In the early match Saturday morning ISU swept the Pilots 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, and 25-20). The Bengals did not trail in the entire first and third sets.,
Makenzie Filer led the way with 13 kills on a .438 attack percentage and seven blocks.,
Tressa Lyman added 11 kills while
Whitney Bartschi-Harrington had 10. Setter
Hayley Farrer posted 38 assists.
Idaho State finished off the undefeated tournament beating UC Riverside 3-1 (29-27, 21-25, 25-11 and 25-20) in the nightcap.
After dropping their only set of the entire tournament, ISU responded with their biggest margin of victory of the season, 25-11 in set four., The Bengals hit .348 in that set while blocking six attacks from the Highlanders.
Tressa Lyman poured in a season-high 24 kills (.447) in the entire match against UC Riverside. It is the second highest total of her career (26 in 2013). She completed the double-double adding 12 digs.
"She really played well," Teichert said. "Her timing was on and she was staying behind the ball. She really put on a good performance."
Two other players reached double figures in digs. Libero
Kylee Sessions had 20 while
Alydia Fields-Grimm had 13.
Setter
Hayley Farrer posted a career high 48 assists.
"She played really well and did a lot of things well," Teichert said. "She is quick and fast to the ball and makes sets a lot of other kids can't."
ISU returns home next week to open Big Sky Conference play., The Bengals take on Montana State on Thursday before hosting Weber State on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reed Gym in Pocatello.
