MISSOULA, Montana - Amanda Ellsworth scored her Big Sky leading 8th goal of the season, but Idaho State fell 3-1 to Montana Sunday afternoon in Missoula.
The senior forward collected a Grizz turnover and beat the keeper to tie the game at one in the 18th minute.
The home team would strike back right before halftime when Maddy Emerick found the back of the net to give Montana a 2-1 lead.
The score would remain the same until the 77th minute when Hallie Widner scored her second of the match and fifth of the season, clinching the victory for the Grizz.
"We could go the way of making excuses as to how we were still spent from the double OT game (vs Eastern Washington) and the longest, hardest travel of the year," Head Coach Allison Gibson said. "But, we decided before the season started that we weren't going to make any excuses for not being at our best every game regardless of the situation."
The Bengals return home for two games this week, hosting North Dakota on Friday and Northern Colorado on Sunday. Despite the loss against Montana, Coach Gibson remains optimistic about the way her team started the conference season.
"I am trying to blend the fact that we are the only Big Sky team that won on the road this weekend with not accepting anything less than our absolute best," Gibson said. "We just need to be smarter about the style of play we execute on a Sunday game on the road. With little left in our legs, we didn't do ourselves any favors by not playing simple soccer. Overall, I'm very happy to get a hard earned split in this road trip, but really wish we could have come away with two wins."
