By Matt Gittins, ISU Sports InformationPOCATELLO, Idaho – Despite their highest field goal percentage (52.5%) of the season the Idaho State women's basketball (6-7, 1-1) team fell to Eastern Washington 88-75 Saturday afternoon on the Idaho Central Credit Union Court inside Reed Gym.
Apiphany Woods stole the ball and drove in for a layup just seven seconds into the game to give the Bengals an advantage they would quickly stretch to 7-0. ISU led 27-17 with 8:10 left in the first half but the visitors would go on an 18-2 run to close out the period and never trail again.
"I thought we had a great start. We came out with the right effort and intensity," Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski said. "They chissled away at it, got stops and took advantage of their size a little bit. They are a good team. They make you pay anywhere you want to help."
Apiphany Woods led the team with 22 points while
Grace Kenyon scored a career-high 20 points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds.
"They both played great and shot high percentages," Sobolewski said. "Grace has to take better care of the ball but she also goes out and gets seven offensive boards. She may have had some turnovers but she got us a lot of shots back. They are developing into the players we hope they will be offensively, now they need to sharpen up and get a little better defensively."
"We came out with great intensity," Woods said. "They (EWU) grinded it out and made plays."
Eastern Washington's starting lineup accounted for 77 of the teams' 88 points led by Hayley Hodgins (24 points) and Lexie Nelson (22 points). ISU lost their first game of the season when scoring 70 or more points. They are now 24-2 in the last four seasons when they hit that plateau.
The Bengals travel to Montana State next Thursday and Montana on Saturday for their first Big Sky road games of the season.
GAME NOTES - ISU outscored EWU 46-26 in the paint
- Anna Lee Policicchio blocked a shot for the tenth consecutive game and had multiple rejections for the seventh time in the last nine game
- Apiphany Woods has scored in double-figures in nine of the last 11 games
- The 22 points for Woods are the second highest total for a player this season. She had 23 against Drake on 12/6/14
- The 13 rebounds for Grace Kenyon are the second highest for a player this season. Lindsay Brown collected 14 against the College of Idaho
- The 75 points is the third highest total of the season for ISU
- Both teams entered the game on a four-game winning streak
