POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State soccer team battled hard for 90 minutes in its last match of the season, but the Bengals were unable to upend the visiting Wildcats of Weber State and fell 1-0 Friday evening at Davis Field. Idaho State honored its four seniors, Lauren Bermudez, Vanessa Cabilan, Sheridan Hapsic and Whitney Peterson, prior to the start of the match in the annual Senior Game.
"The last thing I said to them is that that's the type of performance right there that the two championship teams I've coached ,that's what they give game in and game out," said Head Coach Allison Gibson. "I think we learned a lot of lessons this year. It's going to take a while to sink all of them in but I'm extremely proud of them."
In the first half, Idaho State (1-17-1, 0-10-0 BSC) nearly scored in the eighth minute when a rocket from ISU sophomore forward Maria Sanchez ricocheted off the crossbar and out of bounds. However, that was one of only seven shots by the Bengals, and ISU's only shot on goal came earlier in the match from freshman midfielder Nikolina Musto in the third minute. Weber State (10-8-1, 6-4-0 BSC) rattled off 13 shots, including nine on goal, in the first half, but Hapsic was steadfast in the net notching nine of her career-tying 13 in the first half alone.
In the second half, Idaho State outshot the visitors 10-7, but Weber State found an opening in the 53rd minute as Abbey Clayton rebounded a blocked shot from Chansi Crompton and knocked the ball past Hapsic's outstretched hands for her first goal of the season. The Bengals were unable to convert on subsequent shots and fell to the Wildcats 1-0.
"I'm so excited about the future of this program and again it's taking all of the things from this year, the bad breaks that we've had and the things we've had to work through as a team," Gibson said. "We have had every single bad luck that we could have this year. Again I just told them, that's the game we know, we love, we hate, we embrace, we want to kick. We chose this game and that's what this game brings us."
