POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team closed out play at the University of Kansas by beating Saint Louis 6-1 on Sunday morning. The Bengals improved to 14-12 on the season while Saint Louis dropped to 15-7.
The Bengals scored six runs on six hits and
Gabby Lopez led the charge with a two-for-four morning with one RBI and one run scored.
Kacie Burnett,
Katelyn Marquez,
Vicky Galasso and
Hailey Breakwell each had a hit.
Sophie Slagle earned the win by pitching a complete game, allowing seven hits, one walk while striking out four.
"We came out with good energy that translated to all parts of our game," Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. "Saint Louis is a great softball team and I was really pleased with our effort. It was a nice team win."
ISU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning and 5-0 after four.
The third inning started with Burnett reaching on an error and after stealing second base she was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Marquez. Galasso then walked to set up Breakwell's two-RBI double to right-center.
Lopez started the scoring in the fourth inning with a single up the middle and she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Maddy Hickman. Later in the inning, Lopez scored on a Saint Louis error and with two outs, Marquez single home Burnett and Galasso had an RBI double that platted Marquez.
Both teams scored a run in the seventh inning.
Idaho State starts Big Sky Conference play March 21-22 with a three-game series at Montana. This is the first year Montana has had a softball program. Both days begin at 1 p.m. with the March 21 contest being a double header.
