POCATELLO, Idaho- It was another five-inning win for the Idaho State softball team on Saturday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium. The Bengals finished off the three-game series against Portland State with a 9-1 victory. The win ups the Bengals record to 25-14 overall and 10-2 in Big Sky Conference play.
ISU had 12 hits, led by
Hailey Breakwell's 3-3 day.
Ashlyn Ames was 2-2 with three RBIs and she pitched 1.1 innings, allowing only one hit. Â
Vicky Galasso scored three times as she walked twice and was intentionally walked once.
Micheala Taylor had two hits, scored two runs and had one RBI.
Sophie Slagle earned the win and improved to 12-6, tossing three innings, allowing only two hits, one run, and one walk while striking out two. Ames pitched 1.1 innings and
Bailey Foster got the final two outs of the fifth inning to close the game.
"It was a really good day," Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. "I thought we played three complete games on all sides of the ball; offensively, defensively and on the mound in particular. I was really pumped for our pitching staff this weekend."
The Bengals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The inning started with
Kacie Burnett tripling to right-center and then with one out Galasso was intentionally walked. Breakwell then scored Burnett on an infield single and Hickman followed with RBI single for the second run of the game. The final run of the inning was an RBI single by Ames.
After a run in the top of the third by the Vikings, the Bengals answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. The inning was sparked by four Bengal hits and a Viking error. Galasso scored the first run off a Portland State throwing error. Ames and
Micheala Taylor tallied RBI singles in the inning.
ISU added the final three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ames connected on her third RBI of the game on a sacrifice.
"She has earned it," Wright said on Ames. "She has had a great few weeks of practice. She has really turned the corner in her hitting. Her mindset is really turning the corner. I feel really good about what she is doing."
Katelyn Marquez then singled to center field, scoring Breakwell and the final run came when
Dara Kolar had a pinch hit two-out RBI double.
The Bengals are in a two-way tie for first place in the Big Sky Conference. Idaho State and Sacramento State are 10-2 and the two teams play a three-game series in Sacramento April 17-18.
