Volleyball Returns Home for Eastern Washington, Weber State

POCATELLO, Idaho –
The Idaho State volleyball team returns home for Big Sky play this weekend as the Bengals host Eastern Washington Thursday, Oct. 13 followed by Weber State Saturday, Oct. 15. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym.

Thursday's match against Eastern Washington will serve as the Bengals' staff and faculty appreciation night; each player will be joined on the court by their favorite staff or faculty member prior to the match start. Saturday's match will serve as ISU's Pink Match; fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of cancer awareness.

SCOUTING EASTERN WASHINGTON

The Eagles carry a 9-6 overall record with a 4-2 mark in conference play, good for second in the north division. EWU picked up a big 3-1 win over defending BSC champs Northern Arizona last weekend.

As a team, Eastern Washington averages 13.2 kills per set hitting .175 with 12.4 assists and 15.3 digs per set. Ka'iulani Ahuna leads the offensive attack for the Eagles with 3.10 kills per set. Ashlee Vaoifi leads the defensive effort with 4.03 digs per set.

Eastern is led by Head Coach Michael King who is in his third season with the Eagles.

SERIES HISTORY

This will be the 76th time in program history that ISU has met EWU.

The Eagles hold the advantage in the series 40-35, but Idaho State has dominated as of late winning the last five straight. Last season, the Bengals overcame a 2-0 match deficit to win in five sets in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament. It was the first time since defeating Northern Colorado in five sets on  Sept. 21, 2012 that the Bengals had overcome a two-set deficit to win.

SCOUTING WEBER STATE

The Wildcats carry a 12-3 record including a 3-3 mark in conference play. WSU entered conference play with a perfect 9-0 record, the best start in school history and the longest winning streak since 1995 and the second-best in WSU history.

WSU averages 12.6 kills and 11.9 assists per set in addition to 15.8 and 3.1 blocks per set; Weber State leads the Big Sky in blocks per set and opponent hitting percentage at .141. Amanda Varley leads the offensive attack with 3.48 kills per set, while Megan Thompson leads the defensive effort with 1.74 blocks per set, good for 2nd in the nation.

Weber State is led by Head Coach Jeremiah Larsen who is in his 2nd season.

SERIES HISTORY

This will be the 86th time in program history that ISU and WSU have played.

Idaho State holds the edge in the series 45-40, and the Bengals have won the last eight matches dating back to Oct. 3, 2012, dropping just four sets in the process.
