POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State soccer team fell to visiting Northern Arizona 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Davis Field in the final home game of the 2016 season.
Northern Arizona (7-7-4, 4-2-3 BSC) claimed the advantage in total shots with a 19-17 edge, but Idaho State (7-12-0, 4-5-0 BSC) recorded two more shots on goal than the 'Jacks, finishing with a 5-3 advantage.
NAU was the aggressor early, recording 12 shots in the first 45 minutes, two of which were on goal. In the 13th minute, Idaho State's defense struggled to contain NAU's Madeline Waszak who dribbled down the right side of the field past ISU's line and fired a shot low to the bottom left side of the goal. Shawna Hennings was unable to stop the shot, giving Northern Arizona the 1-0 advantage.
Neither team was able to score in the remaining 32 minutes sending ISU into the break facing a 1-0 deficit.
In the second half the Bengals created several opportunities to score. Eight different ISU players recorded a shot in the second half alone as the Bengals logged 11 second-half shots to NAU's six, yet Idaho State was unable to finish for a score. Northern Arizona goalkeeper Meghan Dickmann recorded four save in the final 45 to preserve NAU's shutout win.
With the loss, the Bengals fall to seventh in the Big Sky with one game remaining. Idaho State travels to Moscow, Idaho to face in-state rival Idaho Friday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. MST in its final regular-season game of the season.
