SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Idaho State soccer team forced extra periods for the second-straight game, but the outcome was in its opponent's favor as the Bengals fell 2-1 in overtime to Sacramento State at Hornet Field on Sunday afternoon. Idaho State was outshot for the first time in the last four games as the Hornets posted a 20-7 advantage including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
"We fought with every last ounce of energy we had today," Head Coach
Allison Gibson said. "I can't remember being so proud of a team as I am with this group of young women. Going into double-overtime on Friday, traveling 12 hours Saturday and playing overtime on the road on Sunday is extremely hard, and these players gave so much. Unfortunately, we came up just short this time."
In the first half, Idaho State (6-10-0, 3-3-0 BSC) held Sacramento State (4-6-4, 2-2-2 BSC) to just six shots with one on goal. However, the Bengals were only able to get off three shots of their own with one on goal. Neither squad was able to score in the first 45, sending the Bengals into the half tied for only the fourth time this season.
In the second half, Sacramento State took control as the Hornets outshot the Bengals 11-4 including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. The Hornets struck first in the 69th minute as CSUS's Jennifer Lum dribbled past ISU's defense and fired a shot past ISU goalkeeper
Shawna Hennings to give Sac State the 1-0 lead.
Nine minutes later, Idaho State returned the favor. Sophomore
Esmeralda Nunez sent a cross that bounced off Sac State's goalkeeper Destiny Butcher after Butcher was unable to corral it. Freshman
Michaela Didericksen headed the free ball into the goal for the equalizing score.
Sacramento State had a final attempt to score in regulation at the 89:25 mark as Kayla Collins smacked a shot from the right wing, but Hennings was there to make the save. Neither team was able to get off a shot in the final 35 seconds, forcing the extra period.
In overtime, the Bengals were unable to get off a shot but weathered two attempts from the Hornets. Sacramento State finally broke the tie with just 19 seconds remaining in the first overtime as Kassidy Kellogg snuck one past Hennings to give Sac State the 2-1 OT win.
