POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State volleyball team hosts Southern Utah Thursday, Nov. 3 and Northern Arizona Saturday, Nov. 5 in its final home matches of the season. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym, and Saturday's match against the visiting Lumberjacks will serve as Senior Night for ISU's three seniors:
Hayley Farrer,
Taeja Davis and
Bailey Bars.
The Bengals secured their spot in the Big Sky Conference Tournament last Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Weber State in Ogden, Utah. With four matches left in regular-season play, Idaho State looks to secure a top seed in the conference tournament.
ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH
Southern Utah is 4-20 on the season with a 2-10 mark in conference play. The T-Birds picked up wins against Sacramento State and Montana this season.
As a squad, SUU averages 10.6 kills per set hitting .151 with 9.99 assists per set. Defensively, the Thunderbirds average 14.6 digs and 2.54 blocks per set. SUU's Chennin Benson leads the squad with 3.08 kills per set, while Sariah Pelaez leads the defensive effort with 4.42 digs per set which ranks sixth in the conference.
Southern Utah is led by Head Coach Craig Choate.
SERIES REVIEW
Idaho State leads the series 11-2 with a perfect 6-0 record at home. The Bengals have won 11-straight against the Thunderbirds; Idaho State was last defeated by Southern Utah with a 3-0 sweep at a neutral site on Nov. 18, 1978.
ABOUT NORTHERN ARIZONA
The Lumberjacks have reached 20 wins for the third-straight season with a 20-5 overall record and a 10-2 mark in Big Sky Conference play.
Currently, the 'Jacks rank in the top 5 in the conference in six statistical categories: Hitting percentage (.265, 1st), opponent hitting percentage (.153, 1st), assists (12.4, 5th), blocks (2.44, 4th), service aces (1.9, 1st) and digs (16.86, 3rd). NAU averages 13.0 kills hitting .265 with 12.4 assists per set. Defensively, the 'Jacks average 16.86 digs and 2.44 blocks per set. Lauren Jacobsen leads the offensive effort with 4.17 kills per set (ranks second overall in conference) hitting .259.
The 'Jacks are led by Head Coach Ken Murphy who is in his fourth season.
SERIES REVIEW
Idaho State leads the overall series 38-32, but the Lumberjacks have won the last four straight with a 3-1 win over ISU in Flagstaff, Ariz. earlier this season on Sept. 29. The Bengals' last win against NAU was a 3-2 win at home on Nov. 21, 2014.
