Men's Hoops Opens Season at New Mexico

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team opens the 2016-17 season on Friday, November 11 at 8 p.m. at the University of New Mexico. The game will be heard live on 102.5 KMGI with the pregame show starting at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and audio will also be available online at isubengals.com. The game will be televised on Root Sports.
 
About New Mexico
New Mexico finished the 2015-16 season 17-15 and 10-8 in Mountain West play. Tim Williams returns to lead New Mexico. Last year he averaged 16.8 points and 7.4 rebounds. In a 113-57 exhibition win over Western New Mexico on Nov. 2 he had 13 points and five rebounds. In an 88-66 exhibition win over Eastern New Mexico, Williams had 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Series vs. New Mexico
New Mexico leads the series 6-2. The Lobos have won the last five meetings with the most recent game being a 79-55 loss at New Mexico on Nov. 14, 2014. The Bengals lost 65-41 at UNM on Nov. 30, 2011. ISU's only two wins came in 1978 and 1966.

Exhibition Win over Southern Virginia
The Idaho State men's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with an 89-55 exhibition victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday night in Reed Gym.

Ethan Telfair and Geno Luzcando each had 20 points to lead the Bengals offensive attack. Luzcando was 7-9 from the field, had five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Telfair was 5-12 from the field with six assists and five steals.

Hayes Garrity had 12 points, Balint Mocsan nine, Stephen Lennox eight and Gary Chivichyan eight. Every Bengal that dressed saw action on the floor. Lennox and Novak Topalovic each had a team-best six rebounds.

Idaho State shot 45.5 percent from the floor while Southern Virginia shot 37.7 percent. The Bengals out rebounded Southern Virginia 40-38 and forced 22 turnovers while turning it over only nine times on their end.

Scoring Threats
This year's Bengal basketball team returns 75.6 percent of its scoring from the 2015-16 season. The team scored 2,297 points and 1,738 of those points return. Four starters return to the Bengal lineup. All four combined to average 48.2 points.  Geno Luzcando scored 14.4 points, Gary Chivichyan scored 7.6 and Kyle Ingram six a game.
