POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team concluded play at the UC Davis Invitational with a 5-4 victory over the University of New Mexico. ISU improved to 5-10 on the season while New Mexico dropped to 7-7.
The Bengals pounded out nine hits and
Bailey Foster and
Sophie Slagle allowed only six hits in the victory.
Micheala Taylor continued her strong offensive play by going 2-4 and scoring one run.
Kacie Burnett was 2-4 with a one scored. Seven different Bengals had hits.
Sophie Slagle earned the win by tossing the final six innings, and allowing four hits, two runs and striking out five.
"The win over New Mexico was our most complete game to date," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We had the lead, then relinquished it but we never flinched. We just kept the pressure on their defense. We need to pick up where we left off as we head to Colorado next weekend."
Idaho State led 2-0 after the top of the second inning. ISU scored a run in the first inning thanks to a lead-off infield single by Taylor. She then advanced to third on a Lobo miscue and scored on an
Alex Portesi RBI down the left field line.
Burnett opened the second inning by reaching base on a bunt and after she stole second she scored on a single by
Sarah Hayes.
UNM scored two runs in the bottom of the second and two in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead but ISU responded with a three-run fifth inning to take the lead for good.
Katlyn Marquez led off with an infield single and after a sacrifice bunt by Portesi,
Maddy Hickman singled to right field to advance the runners.
Ashlyn Ames followed with an RBI single and Burnett reached base on a bunt, allowing
Molly Nutt to score, who was pinch running for Hickman. Kolar platted the final run of the inning on a sacrifice RBI.
Idaho State returns to the field for a tournament March 5-6 at Colorado State. The Bengals will play two games against Nebraska Omaha and two against Colorado State.
