WAIPAHU, Oahu- On the fifth game in nine days, the Idaho State soccer team put together one of its better performances of the season. Although the game resulted in a 1-0 overtime loss to the University of Hawaii, a team that is now 3-0-1, Bengal coach
Allison Gibson is pleased with the progress of how her roster of eight freshmen, seven sophomores and juniors and only two seniors are progressing.
"I almost don't have words because I am so incredibly proud of them." Gibson said. "To fight through the schedule and five games in nine days and to put that performance on the home field of Hawaii is unbelievable. We are that close."
Hawaii out shot ISU 23-12 and
Shawna Hennings had 11 saves while playing the entire contest.
"Obviously they outshot us but we had great opportunities, especially with the corner kicks." Gibson said. "I thought we had some good opportunities to put the game away. To fight through two overtime games on the road at the end of that series and to battle the way we did was amazing to watch. We are building something great."
After only managing three shots in the first half to UH's eight, Â ISU had nine second-half shots. The backline of the defense and Hennings also came up with big stops to send the game into overtime.
"That backline is really coming together and being solid," Gibson said. "Shawna had some huge saves and kept us in the game. That relationship between our goalkeeper and the backline is getting stronger and stronger every game. To give up one goal over the weekend is tremendous for our defense."
Idaho State has a week off before returning to the field on Sept. 4 for an 11 a.m. contest vs. New Mexico. Â
