POCATELLO, Idaho- The University of Idaho broke open a close first half to beat Idaho State 77-62 on Saturday evening at Reed Gym.
Idaho State shot 34.6 percent from the field while Idaho State shot 44.9 but shot 50 percent in the second half.
Ethan Telfair scored 16 points and
Brandon Boyd had 15. The Bengals were out rebounded 32-30. Idaho State was 15-19 from the free throw line and Idaho was 24-28.
Novak Topalovic had a game-high seven rebounds.
Idaho State trailed 31-30 at halftime and led briefly at 32-31 to open the second half. The game was tied at 40 after an
Erik Nakken 3-pointer with 12:03 to play in the game. The Vandals then went on a 17-4 run to take 57-44 with 6:19 remaining.
"I think Idaho played really well," Idaho State coach
Bill Evans said. "They did a good job defensively and we had a hard time scoring the ball. We fouled a bunch in the end but we couldn't score baskets."
Idaho led by as 15 points at two different occasions in the game.
"They are a good defensive team," Evans said. "They didn't do anything we didn't expect. They were slowing us down, especially when they got the lead. We did a bad job of attacking their press."
In the first half the game was tied five times and the lead changed hands six times.
The Bengals biggest lead was 15-11 with 11:34 to play in the first half and 20-16 with 8:07 remaining after a Telfair 3-pointer. ISU also had a 22-18 lead before the Vandals scored the next seven points to lead 25-22 with 5:56 left in the half.
