POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's basketball team stomped visiting College of Idaho 89-32 Thursday morning at Reed Gym in front of 1,365 rowdy fans. The game was the first annual Field Trip game as the Bengals welcomed nearly 900 students from Green Acres Elementary, Grace Lutheran and Pocatello Community Charter School.
"I thought we played hard and did the right things," Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski said. "It was great to get all those other kids in the game; Amanda, Madison and Nicole, they all played over 20 minutes."
Eleven Bengals saw the floor with five players finishing in double figures led by sophomore point guard Dora Goles with a season-high 15 points off 6-of-7 from the floor including 3-of-4 from three. Goles also delivered three assists with two steals and a block. Sophomore forward Irene Vicente finished with her first career double-double, hauling in a game-high 14 boards to go along with 13 points, six assists and six steals.
"I don't think everyone in Pocatello got a good feel for what a good player she is or how good she is because she didn't play very well against Northwest Nazarene; she was really nervous," Sobolewski said. "I think her coming out today, people saw a glimpse of what she could do."
Idaho State (3-0) is off to its best start since the 1997-98 season which saw the Bengals start 5-0. Against College of Idaho, ISU raced out to a 21-5 advantage after the first 10 minutes, shooting 47 percent and forcing seven Yotes turnovers. College of Idaho (0-4) struggled to score, shooting just 18 percent from the floor.
In the second period, Goles had the hot hand, going 2-for-2 from the floor for five points. The Bengals allowed 11 College of Idaho points but countered with 22 second-period points to gain a 27-point advantage by the break, 43-16.
Idaho State continued to push in the second half, combining for 46 points shooting 57 percent while limiting College of Idaho to just 16 points. Goles led the Bengals in the second half with 10 points off a perfect 4-of-4 from the field while Vicente corralled 10 of her 14 rebounds in the second half to go along with seven points and three assists. The Bengals never trailed and cruised to the 89-32 win.
"I think we will have our ups and downs, and hopefully we can figure out how to score more than one way so you don't rely on just that," Sobolewski said.
The Yotes were led by Alyssa Case with 11 points to go along with three steals and one rebound while Madison Holly hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
Idaho State continues nonconference play on the road with games at UC Irvine Nov. 19 and at Pepperdine Nov. 21.
