Bengals Drop Final game of Bulldog Classic to No. 12 Minnesota

FRESNO, Calif.- The Idaho State softball team lost 12-2 to No 12 Minnesota in five innings on Sunday morning in the final day of the Bulldog Classic at Fresno State University. Minnesota is now 14-0 while ISU dropped to 2-7. The Bengals went 2-3 in the five-game tournament.

"We definitely improved in areas from our first weekend," Idaho State coach Candi Letts said. "We need to improve on the little things that make the difference in the basic plays. We scored more runs against good competition this weekend so that was a big positive going into this next weekend. It was great to see Kacie break the school record  for most hits by going 3-4 against Fresno State."

Kelsey Breer and Alex Portesi had the Bengals only two hits of the game. Mariah Mulcahy went two innings, allowing seven hits, eight runs, three walks and one strikeout. Ashlyn Ames tossed the final two innings and allowed seven hits and four runs.

Minnesota scored a run in the bottom of the first and added six in the second inning. The Bengals first run came in the third inning. Breer led off with a lead-off double and she later scored on a fielding error by Minnesota.

The Gophers added four runs in the bottom of the third and ISU added one more run in the fourth inning. The Bengals loaded the bases in the inning and scored their second run when  Frankie Tago walked.

Idaho State plays next weekend in a tournament at Colorado State that starts March 3 vs. Penn State and Buffalo.
