POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team dropped a double header to Weber State on Saturday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium. The Bengals lost game 1 7-6 and then dropped a 9-6 contest in game 2.
Despite the two losses the Bengals had a solid offensive performance, combing for 20 hits on the day.
Emma Bordenkecher led the charge by going 5-7 with one homer, four RBIs and she scored four runs.
Haley Harrison had three hits, one being a grand slam in the first game and five RBIs and
Sarah Hayes finished the day with three hits.
Harley Wells and
Ashlyn Ames took the losses.
"As far as the competition and the games I don't think spectators could ask for more of an intense environment to play softball," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "It was very intense. The games were close. For the most part they were well-played. Talk about a dog fight."
In the first game of the day ISU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a grand slam by Harrison and an RBI single by Bordenkecher.
Weber State then took a 6-5 lead after the top of the third inning but ISU rallied to tie the game at six in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single by Harrison. Weber State added a run in the fourth and was able to hold off the Bengals in the final three innings.
Hayes was 2-4 in the game and Harrison was 2-3 with five RBIs.
Mariah Mulcahy went three innings, allowed five hits and six runs. Wells pitched the final four innings and allowed one run and struck out three.
Both teams scored early in the second. Weber State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Bengals came back with two in the bottom half of the inning. Hayes led off with an infield single and Bordenkecher later doubled her home. Bordenkecher was later driven home by
Aubrey Creekmore.
The Wildcats added three more runs in the top of the third inning. ISU answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on another RBI double by Bordenkecher.
WSU had two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth while Idaho State scored one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Bordenkecher homered in the fifth inning and
Shayna Dahlen had an RBI single to left in the sixth. Ames singled to right-center for the run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Idaho State had 12 hits but committed four errors in the field. Weber State finished the game with 13 hits and two errors.
"This team played with more energy and emotional drive than any three-game series we have played all year," Letts said. "The difference was one play or one home run. Does it suck to lose all three, absolutely? But if we get one thing going our way it's a different series."
Idaho State returns to the field next weekend for a three-game series at Montana.
