POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State volleyball team hits the road for its fourth-straight non-conference tournament this weekend as it travels to Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Classic, hosted by Boise State University. The Bengals will face Oregon State Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., No. 1 Minnesota Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. and Boise State Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
BENGALS PREVIEW
The Bengals are on a five-match skid with two losses coming against Top 25 teams with a 3-0 loss to then-No. 16 Michigan and a 3-0 loss at then-No. 25 Colorado State. ISU finished the Colorado State Tournament averaging 12.7 kills per set hitting .134 with 12.7 digs per set and 2.0 blocks per set.
Abby Garrity led the Bengals with 3.80 kills per set off 10.5 swings with 2.6 digs per set.
SCOUTING OREGON STATE
· The Beavers are 8-1 so far this season with their only loss coming as a 3-0 loss at North Texas on Sept. 8. OSU averages13.97 kills per set hitting .307 to go along with 14.5 digs per set and 2.45 blocks.
· Preseason All-Pac-12 selection Mary-Kate Marshall leads the Beavers with 4.86 kills per set (ranks 12 nationally) hitting .343 to go along with 2.10 digs and 0.41 blocks. Kylee McLaughlin leads OSU with 10.17 assists per set, while Kayla Ellis leads with 3.38 digs per set.
· The Beavers are led by Head Coach Mark Barnard who is in his second season as head coach and 13 overall season with OSU.
· This is the ninth time in program history that the Bengals and Beavers have met. OSU holds an 8-0 advantage in the series, with the last meeting ending in a 3-0 Bengal loss on Aug. 30, 2014.
SCOUTING No. 1 MINNESOTA
·The Gophers are a perfect 8-0 after defeating then-No. 5 Texas 3-1 in Austin on Sept. 8. As a squad, Minnesota averages 14.5 kills per set hitting .307 with 16.7 digs per set and 2.8 blocks per set.
·The Gophers are led by freshman outside hitter Stephanie Samedy at 4.50 kills per set hitting .331 to go along with 2.96 digs per set. Dalianliz Rosado leads the defensive effort with 4.50 digs per set. Molly Lohman adds 1.4 blocks per set.
· Minnesota is led by Hugh McCutcheon who is in his sixth season with the Gophers.
·This will be the third meeting between ISU and Minnesota, and the series is tied 1-1. Idaho State won the first meeting 3-0 on Sept. 19, 1986, but the Gophers took the second meeting 3-0 on Sept. 3, 2004.
SCOUTING BOISE STATE
·The Broncos are 6-3 so far this season averaging 14.6 kills per set hitting .234 with 13.5 assists, 16.8 digs and 2.5 blocks per set.
· Sierra Nobley leads BSU with 4.97 kills per set (8th nationally) hitting .223 with 3.06 digs per set. Maddi Osburn leads the defensive effort with 5.91 digs per set (9th nationally).
· BSU is led by Head Coach Shawn Garus who is in his ninth season.
·This will be the 65th meeting between Idaho State and Boise State, and the series is tied 32-all. Boise State has the edge in Boise, with an 18-13 advantage. In the last meeting, Boise State defeated Idaho State 3-1 in Pocatello on Sept. 8, 2016.
