Volleyball Opens Conference Play on the Road

POCATELLO, Idaho –
The Idaho State volleyball team opens conference play on the road this weekend with matches at Portland State on Thursday, Sept. 21 and at Sacramento State on Saturday, Sept. 23. The matches will be at 8 p.m. MST at Portland State and 2 p.m. MST at Sacramento State.

BENGALS PREVIEW

The Bengals are on an eight-match skid with three losses coming against Top 25 teams with a 3-0 loss to then-No. 16 Michigan, a 3-0 loss at then-No. 25 Colorado State and a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Minnesota. ISU finished Boise State Classic averaging 10.2 kills per set hitting .134 with 12.67 digs per set and 1.56 blocks per set.

Senior outside hitter Chloe Hirst led the offensive push for the Bengals at the Boise State Classic as she averaged 3.44 kills per set hitting .179 with 1.78 digs per set.

SCOUTING OPPONENTS

PORTLAND STATE

· The Vikings are 9-3 on the season and are on a three-match win streak. Notable wins for Portland State include Nevada (3-1), Arizona State (3-1) and at Gonzaga (3-0). The Vikings most recently won the Nike Invitational, hosted by Portland, with 3-0 sweeps over Portland, CSUN and UTEP.

· PSU averages 13.2 kills per set hitting .232 with 15.1 digs per set, 12.4 assists per set and 2.5 blocks per set.

· Currently, the Vikings rank second in the Big Sky in hitting percentage, first in assists and first in kills.

· Caitlin Bettenay leads the Vikings with 3.89 kills per set, good for second in the conference, while Tasha Bojanic leads in digs with 3.52 per set.

· The Vikings are led by Head Coach Michael Seemann who is in his 11th year as head coach for Portland State.

· Portland State leads the overall series 34-22 with a 17-9 edge in Portland. The Vikings won the last meeting 3-0 in Portland on Nov. 12, 2016.

SACRAMENTO STATE

· The Hornets are 9-7 overall on the season but are on a two-match skid. Sac State fell to Pepperdine 3-0 and to Missouri 3-2 to close its non-conference schedule last weekend.

· The Hornets rank third in the conference in assists, kills and digs with 12.05 assists per set, 12.93 kills per set and 16.36 digs per set.

· Senior outside hitter Shannon Boyle leads the offensive attack with 3.42 kills per set, good for fifth in the conference. Senior defensive specialist Brigitte Murdock leads the squad with 4.57 digs per contest to lead the conference while senior setter Kennedy Kurtz leads the conference in assists with 10.49 per set.

· Sac State is led by Head Coach Ruben Volta who is in his 10th season.

· The Hornets lead the overall series 30-13, and Sac State has won each of the last three contests. In the last meeting, Sacramento State defeated Idaho State 3-1 in Sacramento on Nov. 10, 2016.
