POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team lost 97-82 to Pepperdine on Monday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field. Idaho State (2-3) shot 53.6 percent (30-56) while Pepperdine (4-2) shot 52.9 percent (36-68). The Bengals made 11 3-pointers on 25 attempts while Pepperdine was 8-19.
"We were terrible defensively," Idaho State coach
Bill Evans said. "We have to get better and we will get better."
The Bengals out rebounded the Wave 39-33 but had 16 turnovers to only three by Pepperdine.
Brandon Boyd led Idaho State with 21 points on 8-14 shooting.
Gary Chivichyan had 15 points off the bench while
Chidi Udengwu had 13 points and six rebounds and
Alonzo Walker had 10 points and six rebounds.
Idaho State led for a majority of the first half. The Bengals jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first four minutes and later led 18-10 with 13:45 left in the first half after a 3-pointer by Chivichyan and 20-12 after two free throws by Udengwu less than a minute later.
Idaho State's biggest lead of the game was nine at 23-14 with 12:06 left in the first half after another 3-pointer by Chivichyan.
Pepperdine then outscored ISU 10-3 over the next four minutes to cut the Bengal lead to 26-24 with 9:17 remaining until halftime. The Wave took their first lead of the game since 2-0 with 5:14 left in the first half on a layup by Darnell Dunn to make the score 36-35.
Pepperdine then led the rest of the game. The Wave led by as many as 20 points after halftime and the Bengals never got closer than five points at 61-56 five minutes into the second half.
Idaho State returns home to host Montana Western on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in Holt Arena.
