PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Idaho State women's tennis season came to a close Thursday afternoon at the Phoenix Tennis Center in Phoenix, Ariz. as the Bengals fell 4-2 to No. 5 Southern Utah in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
Idaho State (9-13) started off well, picking up the doubles point after winning two-of-three doubles matches. Southern Utah (14-9) took the first doubles match with a 6-3 win over
Hristina Cvetkovic and
Megan Poe at No. 1 doubles, but the Bengals came storming back.
Melissa Coburn and
Madison Fenske battled Charity Sagiao and Alexandra Ngo for the 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3 doubles, and the Bengals sealed the doubles point with another close win at No. 2 doubles.
Louise-Mare Botes and
Huibre-Mare Botes bested SUU's Zoe Tanti and Eira Tobrand 7-5 to take the doubles point.
In singles play, Southern Utah picked up three straight wins to take a 3-1 lead in the match, winning at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 2 singles. ISU's
Angela Walker gave the Bengals their first singles win with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the T-birds' Daniela Cozzi at No. 6 singles. However, Southern Utah picked up the next singles win as SUU's Tanti defeated Cvetkovic in a three-set battle at No. 3, winning 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). The fourth win secured the 4-2 win for the Thunderbirds, consequently ending ISU's season.
"We battled hard today in the heat but not quite hard enough," Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "We made some errors on critical points. We had plenty of chances were up in many of the matches, but we just didn't get it today."
Idaho State finished the season 9-13 overall with a 6-5 mark in Big Sky Conference play, earning the Bengals their second-straight trip to the Big Sky Conference tournament. ISU will return all nine players next season for their junior year.
