Idaho State Faces Utah Valley in a Tuesday Night Clash

POCATELLO, Idaho –
Idaho State (2-2) travels to Orem, Utah to face Utah Valley (1-2) in the team's fifth match in as many days Tuesday, Aug. 28. Play begins at 6 p.m. and marks the 16th match in the series. 

Recent Play
Idaho State is coming off a 2-2 performance at the Hyatt Regency Invitational. The Bengals lost matches to Georgia Tech and Georgetown on Friday before defeating Winthrop and Abilene Christian in five sets apiece Saturday.

Abby Garrity led the charge for ISU, recording 64 kills on 194 attempts for a .232 hitting percentage. The senior averaged 3.37 kills and 1.84 digs per set during the tournament, securing an all-tournament nod and U.S. Bank Bengal Athlete of the Week honors.

Nicole Lee and Brooke Pehrson were the only other attackers to average two or more kills with Lee recording 2.44 per set and Pehrson tallying 2.05 per set. Pehrson also leads the Bengals' first line of defense with 28 blocks while Alexis Thompson-Smith had 14.

Haylie Keck recorded 107 digs in 19 sets as she advanced to No. 7 on ISU's all-time digs list. Sophomore setter Chelsea Johnson recorded 189 assists for a 9.55 per set average.

Scouting Utah Valley
The Wolverines appeared in the UC Davis Aggie Invitational and finished 1-2 after sweeping Holy Cross and dropping matches to UC Davis and Northern Arizona.

Utah Valley hit .264 in the season opener and out-blocked Holy Cross 12-3 as they cruised to a three-set win. The team struggled in the attack against UC Davis and Northern Arizona, posting .168 and .161 hitting percentages respectively. The team was swept by UC Davis and lost a tight five-game match against NAU with the fifth set ending 18-16.

Kristen Allred was a force on the outside, collecting 37 kills in 11 sets. Kazna Tarawhiti averaged 3.00 kills per set with 27 overall.

UVU has several contributors on the defensive side of play. Five players recorded 20 or more digs while two players finished with double-digit block counts.

The Wolverines are led by Head Coach Sam Atoa who enters his 20th season at the helm of the program. Atoa carries a 390-221 overall record with Utah Valley.  

These two teams have met 15 times with Idaho State holding a slight 8-7 advantage in the series. Utah Valley claimed the most recent matchup in 2017 with a four-set victory in Reed Gym. ISU has won five of the past six matches and four of seven on the road.
