POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team gave Northwestern all they could handle in the final day of the Titan Classic at Cal State Fullerton. Northwestern, who played in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, rallied to beat the Bengals 7-4 after a four run seventh inning on Sunday morning.
The Bengals scored four runs on 11 hits and committed three errors. Northwestern scored seven runs on 10 hits and had one error.
Idaho State had four players with two hits.
Haley Harrison,
Aubrey Creekmore and
Billie Jean Wells were 2-4 and
Frankie Tago was 2-3.
Mailee Newman and
Autumn Pease each went three innings. Newman allowed three hits, two runs (one earned), walked four and struck out three. Pease allowed four hits, one run with one walk and two strikeouts.
Kelsea Sweeney took the loss. She pitched the seventh inning, allowing four runs (three earned) and one walk.
 "We competed against a Top 25 team and they had to play their "A" game to come back and beat us," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We played hard in every game this weekend and now we have time to practice and learn to finish. I am very proud of our effort this weekend.
Idaho State led 3-0 after the second inning. To start off the bottom of the second,
Shayna Dahlen walked and Creekmore doubled to left field.
Courtney Wiley would drive in the first run on a one out infield single. Creekmore would score the second run of the inning when she stole home and
MaKenzie Van Sickle singled home Wiley on a single up the middle.
Northwestern, scored two runs in the fourth and added a run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at three. The Bengals regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth to take the 4-3 lead. Wells started the inning with an infield single and she later scored on a single up the middle by
Cassidy FitzGerald.
Northwestern scored its four runs in the top of the seventh on three hits and the Bengals committed one error.
Idaho State has next weekend off before traveling to UC Davis for a tournament Feb. 22-24. The Bengals play UTEP, Saint Mary's, Seattle and UC Davis.
