POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team lost 99-93 to Portland State on Thursday evening at Viking Pavilion in Portland, Ore.
Jared Stutzman had a season-high 24 points on 8-12 shooting from the field.
Brandon Boyd added 24 points and three steals.
Chier Maker had 12 points and eight rebounds while
Austin Smellie had a season-high 11 points.
Sam Dowd had 10 points and five assists.
Idaho State shot 46 percent from the field (28-61) and made 13 3-pointers on 26 attempts. Portland State shot 51 percent from the field and made 15 3-pointers on 28 attempts.
"I don't like the result but I am really proud of my guys," Idaho State coach
Bill Evans said. "They all played really hard."
Idaho State was 24-34 from the free throw line and had only 11 turnovers to 16 for the Vikings. The Bengals were out rebounded 44-32.
"They beat us up on the glass a little bit," Evans said.
Idaho State led for a majority of the first half and held a 49-47 lead at halftime. The Bengals jumped out to a 16-9 lead after a 3-pointer by
Balint Mocsan with 14:53 left in the first half.
The Vikings then went on an 8-0 run to lead 17-16 a little over a minute later. ISU countered with an 8-0 run of its own to lead 24-17 with 11:42 left in the first half following a 3-pointer by Boyd.
PSU rallied to take a 28-27 lead with 9:33 to play and would later lead 45-40 with 3:22 to play in the first half. The Bengals closed out the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 49-47 halftime lead following a 3-pointer by Dowd with two seconds left.
Portland State's Jamie Orme hit a 3-pointer in the first 10 seconds of the second period to make the score 50-49. PSU would lead the rest of the game.
The Vikings extended their lead to 65-55 five minutes into the final period and the lead would balloon to 75-60 three minutes later. Idaho State got no closer than four points the rest of the way at 97-93 with six seconds left in the game.
Idaho State returns to the court on March 2 for a 7 p.m. game at Northern Colorado. The Bengals then close out the regular season with home games vs. Weber State (March 4), Eastern Washington (March 7) and Idaho (March 9). All games begin at 7 p.m. in Holt Arena.
