Game 22: Idaho State at Southern Utah

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team continues its road trip with a 2 p.m. contest at SUU on Saturday, Feb. 9.  Tipoff is at 2 p.m. and Jerry Miller will call the game live on 102.5 KMGI. Following Saturday's game, Idaho State returns home to host Montana State on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym. The Bengals then host Montana on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

Scouting SUU
Southern Utah is 11-10 and 6-6 in Big Sky Conference play. Cameron Oluyitan leads the T-Birds in scoring at 13 points a game. He shoots .453 percent from the field and .727 from the free throw line. Brandon Better scores 12.9 points a game and Andre Adams nets 10.6 points.  Harrison Butler scores 9.8 points and averages a team-best 6.5 rebounds a game. SUU scores 77 points a game and shoots .439 percent from the field. Opponents average 76.2 points and shoot .422 percent from the field.

In conference play, Better averages 13.5 points and Oluyitan scores 13.2 points. Adams is averaging 10.7 points and shooting .565 percent from the field. SUU scores 75.3 points in conference and gives up 77.6. The T-Birds shoot .435 percent from the field and opponents shoot .434 percent.

Recapping 81-79 Win at NAU
- The .561 field goal percentage was the best mark of the season.
- 81 points was the fifth most points scored.
- 50 percent three-point field goal percentage tied for the best mark of the season.
- Chier Maker's six field goals made tied his season-high.
- Blake Truman played a season-high 14 minutes.
- Balint Mocsan tied his career-high for 3-pointers made with seven.
- This was the first time the Bengal have won a game when allowing an opponent to shoot 50 percent or better from the field. NAU shot 50 percent.
- Idaho State led by as many as 19 points at 59-40 with 17 minutes left in the game. NAU rallied to tie the game at 79 with 21 seconds left but a tip-in by Chier Maker with .9 seconds left lifted Idaho State to the victory.
- Idaho State shot 56.1 percent from the floor and made 12 3-pointers on 24 attempts. Balint Mocsan led the three-point barrage by tying his career-high with seven on nine attempts. He led the team with 21 points.
- Chier Maker had 15 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Boyd had 13 points and six assists while Kelvin Jones had 10 points and seven rebounds.
- The Bengals had 14 assists but made five free throws on only eight attempts while NAU finished the evening 18-22. NAU shot 50 percent from the floor.
- The Bengals led the Lumberjacks 50-39 at halftime thanks to a shooting percentage of 66.7 percent. Idaho State was 8-14 from three-point line in the first half.
- Idaho State scored the first seven points of the second half to lead 57-39 following two baskets by Boyd and a 3-pointer by Maker.
- The Bengals maintained its double digit lead until the final seven minutes of the game. ISU stretched its lead back to 10 at 77-67 with 5:40 to play after a layup by Alonzo Walker. NAU then outscored Idaho State 12-2 to tie the game at 79. Maker then hit his game-winning layup on a tip in after a miss by Boyd.

Wins vs. Losses
In Idaho State's nine wins, the team averages 79 points a game and allows 66.8. The Bengals shoot .456 percent in wins and hold opponents to .406 percent. ISU shoots .410 percent from the three-point line and opponents shoot .319. Brandon Boyd averages 12.8 points, Balint Mocsan 12.1, Gary Chivichyan 10.8, Chier Maker 9.7 and 6.4 rebounds and Kelvin Jones is averaging 9.1 points and 6.2 rebounds.

In the 12 losses, Idaho State has given up 80 points or more in eight games. Idaho State shooting percentage average is .442 percent while opponents shoot .525 percent. Idaho State has been beaten by double digits in all but one loss, an 83-76 loss to Pacific in Reed Gym. Brandon Boyd averages 15.8 points a game in losses and Balint Mocsan scores 11.5 points a contest.

Road Warriors
Idaho State already has five road wins this season. Since the 2000-01 season the most road wins the Bengals have won is five. ISU won five road games in 2017-18, 2015-16, 2005-06 and 2000-01. The last time an Idaho State team had six road wins was the 1993-94 team. That team won seven road games.
