POCATELLO, Idaho- In her first collegiate start, freshman
Autumn Pease shut out Louisville, from the ACC, 3-0 on Friday afternoon in the second day of the Titan Class at Cal State Fullerton. The Bengals lost the night-cap to Loyola Marymount 1-0.
In the first game of the day, Pease pitched a complete game, striking out three, walking four and scattering seven hits.
The Bengals had six hits and committed only one error in the field while Louisville committed five errors in the shutout loss.
Frank Tago led the offense by going 2-3 with one RBI. Makenzie Van Sickle and
Haley Harrison each had one hit and
Emma Bordenkecher had one hit and two RBIs.
This is the sixth win over a Power 5 school since the program was brought back in 2007. In 2013, Idaho State beat Utah 9-8 and in 2015 the Bengals beat Wisconsin 9-5. In 2017, ISU beat Penn State 12-6 and last year Idaho State beat Purdue 3-0 and 6-1.
The Bengals first run came in the second inning. With one out
Cassidy FitzGerald singled down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt by
Aubrey Creekmore, Tago singled home
Madi Jackson, who was pinch running for FitzGerald.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning when Idaho State scored two runs.
Tago opened the inning by reaching base on a Cardinal error. Then with one out Van Sickle reached on an infield single and Bordenkecher would drive in two runs on a two-out triple to right field.
Against LMU, the game was scoreless through three innings. The Bengals gave up a run in the fourth inning and managed only two hits for the game.
Kelsea Sweeney pitched four innings, allowed seven hits, six walks and struck out five.
Mariah Mulcahy allowed one hit in the final two innings, striking out two and walking one.
"This was a tough loss to a good team," Letts said. "Our pitching and defense have been solid in all three games. We need to make adjustments at the plate and I am confident that the more we play the better we will become offensively."
The Bengals play Pacific at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Buffalo at 1:30 p.m. The Titan Classic concludes Sunday at 10 a.m. against Northwestern.
