POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team swept Utah Valley University in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium, winning 5-0 and 8-6.
The Bengals pounded out 17 hits in the two games, led by
Emma Bordenkecher going 3-4 with four RBIs, one home run, two doubles and three walks.
Billie Jean Wells was 4-6 with two RBIs and three doubles.
MaKenzie Van Sickle was 3-6 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Jayden DeMoss had two hits and two RBIs. Eight different Bengals had hits on the day.
Autumn Pease earned the win in the game 1, 5-0, win. She pitched five innings, allowed one hit, one walk and struck out nine.
Kelsea Sweeney earned the game 2, 8-6, win. She went five innings, allowed seven hits, four runs, one walk while striking out three.
Mariah Mulcahy pitched the final two innings of both games. She struck out five while allowing five hits and two runs.
In game 1, the Bengals took a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
Billie Jean Wells led off with a double to left field and with two outs Bordenkecher was intentionally walked, setting up a two-RBI single by
Amber Arreola.
Idaho State added a run in the fourth inning. With one out
Aubrey Creekmore walked and she later scored on a two-out RBI double by Wells.
The Bengals added two runs in the sixth. Creekmore walked and was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Frankie Tago. Wells then singled to right field and later in the inning with two outs, Van Sickle drove in the final two runs of the game.
Idaho State had nine hits and did not commit an error. Bordenkecher was 2-2 with two RBIs while Wells was 3-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
In the second game, the Bengals fell behind 4-2 after the top of the fourth inning. ISU scored two runs in the first on a two-run bomb to right field by Bordenkecher.
Idaho State then scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the lead. The Bengals had eight hits while UVU finished with 10.
Idaho State opens Big Sky Conference play March 23-24 against Portland State. The two teams play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on the 23
rd and the single-game on the 24
th starts at 12 p.m.
