ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Idaho State women's tennis team picked up two wins in St. George today with vastly different results. The Bengals first topped Dixie State 6-1 before grinding out a 4-3 win against Southern Utah.
"It was an absolute barn burner today," said Head Coach
Gretchen Maloney. "Our doubles play was solid and winning that point was huge taking us into singles. I love the determination and grit that they showed today."
Idaho State won the doubles point in both matches and followed up with strong singles play. The duos of
Louise-Mare Botes and
Alexandra Arkhipov and
Madison Fenske and
Melissa Coburn each went 2-0 in partner play. The doubles point ended up being the difference maker in the Southern Utah match after the teams split singles play 3-3.
Botes and Poe were the biggest winners with 2-0 records in singles play to cap a flawless weekend; both players won each match in straight sets.
Hristina Cvetkovic clinched the match against Southern Utah with a tight 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) win at No. 1 singles after sitting out the match against Dixie State.
Angela Walker,
Adriene Pavek and Fenske all tallied singles wins against Dixie State to contribute to the rout. Walker won 6-2, 6-4 to give Idaho State straight-sets wins at positions No. 1-3.
Fenske and Pavek both continued to a third set after winning the opening frame. Fenske topped her opponent 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (4) and Pavek defeated hers 7-5, 4-6, 10-8. The Dixie State match began yesterday afternoon but finished this morning after rain delayed play.
The wins bring Idaho State to an even record at 9-9 overall. The team is now 4-5 in Big Sky play with just one match remaining. The Bengals play their final contest of the season at home next Thursday at 2 p.m. against the Weber State Wildcats.
