Softball Sweeps Opening Day of CSU Classic

POCATELLO, Idaho-
The Idaho State softball team swept the opening day of the CSU Classic after defeating Kennesaw State, 13-7, and Purdue, 7-0, on Friday morning in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Bengals had 27 hits on the day with 10 doubles, one triple, and three homeruns. Emma Bordenkecher finished the day going 5-8 at the plate with three doubles and a triple. Frankie Tago was 4-8 with two homeruns and a double to bring in four RBIs. Mailee Newman also homered and doubled on the day to bring in a team-high five RBIs. 

Morgan Hess added four hits, two of them doubles. Shayna Dahlen followed with three hits, two of them a doubles.Kelsey Breer recorded four hits and two RBIs while Kaylee Butterworth and Isabel Cargill each had two hits.

"It was a fabulous day of offense and team effort today," said Head Coach Cristal Brown. "Big shutout in the second game gives us momentum heading into tomorrow."

ISU 13 KSU 7 
ISU was dangerous at the plate with eight different Bengals combining for 16 hits. Tago was unstoppable, going 3-4 with two homeruns, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Bordenkecher was also a threat, going 4-5 with two doubles and a triple to bring in two RBIs and three runs scored.

Hess was 3-5 with one double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Breer was 2-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Newman homered in the game, scoring two RBIs.
 
Cargill and Dahlen were each 1-2 with a double. Butterworth singled in the game.
 
The Bengals committed five errors that accounted for three unearned runs for Kennesaw State.
 
The victory goes to Kelsea Sweeney after giving up just two earned runs on eight hits and striking out two.
 
The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after putting together four hits. The Bengals tied the game in the top of the third after Bordenkecher doubled to left to bring in Cargill who walked earlier in the inning.
 
A two-run homerun from Tago in the fourth gave ISU a 3-1 advantage just before KSU put up another run off a triple and two ISU errors to bring the game to 3-2.
 
The Bengals opened up their lead in the fifth after a string of contagious hitting. Bordenkecher started the inning with a triple and was brought in on an RBI single up the middle from Breer. Hess kept the momentum going with a two RBI double that forced a pitching change for the Owls. Tago was up for the challenge, crushing her second two-run homerun of the game to bring ISU up 8-2.
 
ISU wasn't done yet as they put up two more runs in the sixth. Bordenkecher doubled to start the inning and took advantage of a KSU throwing error to make it around the bases. Three back-to-back singles from Breer, Hess, and Tago loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly from Dahlen strengthened the ISU lead, 10-2.
 
The Owls punched back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs off of three hits and three ISU errors to close the Bengal lead 10-5 heading into the final inning.
 
Cargill started the seventh with a double and was brought home on an RBI single from Bordenkecher. With two strikes, Newman smacked a two-run homerun to left to bring the Bengals back to an eight-run lead, 13-5.
 
The Owls pieced together two more runs in the bottom of the inning but it wasn't enough as the Bengals walked away with a 13-7 victory.

ISU 7 Purdue 0
ISU strung together another 11 hits in its second game of the day, five of them doubles.
 
Newman and Dahlen were each 2-4 at the plate with a double. Newman brought in three RBIs with Dahlen bringing in two. Breer was 2-3 with one RBI and Bordenkecher was 1-3 with a double and one RBI.
 
Tago and Hess also doubled in the game. Butterworth and Cargill each singled for a base hit.
 
The Bengals went up 2-0 in the top of the first after a two RBI single from Newman drove in Cargill and Bordenkecher. Dahlen brought in two RBIs off a double to bring ISU up 4-0 to end the inning.

Back-to-back doubles from Tago and Hess in the third put two runners on for ISU. Breer forced another run to bring the Bengal lead to 5-0.
 
Bordenkecher and Newman followed the next inning with back-to-back doubles. Newman's double scored Bordenkecher, ending the fourth in a 6-0 advantage.
 
Two base hits, a sacrifice bunt, and two walks brought another run across for ISU in the fifth. Neither team would score the rest of the game as the Bengals finished in a 7-0 victory.
 
Newman earns the victory after giving up just six hits and three walks while striking out two in five innings pitched. Newman only allowed Purdue to reach third one time.
 
Sweeney came in to relieve Newman, pitching two innings and giving up one hit and striking out one.
