Bengals Break Streak, Down SUU 3-1

 

 

POCATELLO, Idaho - Idaho State defeated Southern Utah University 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23) breaking an 11-game losing streak.

The Bengals hit a season high .288 attack percentage on the match en route to the victory.

The Orange and black took control of the match early breaking a 6-6 tie in the first set and going on a 7-1 lead to take a 13-7 lead in the match. The Bengals would extend their lead to 20-14 before closing out the set.

The Bengals outkilled the Thunderbirds 16-8 in the set and hit a match-high .342 percent.

The Thunderbirds came back in set two and hit .441 to win set two.

The two teams battled back and forth over the third set until the Bengals broke the tie at 15-15. Rachel Warren had her second service ace of the match which sparked a 5-1 run to give the Bengals a 22-16 lead.

The Bengals would then close out the third set to take a commanding 2-1 lead on the match.

With victory in the sights, Idaho State took control early in the fourth set and didn't look back. Cruising to a 23-18 lead. The Thunderbirds were able to claw back to 24-23 before the Bengals closed out the match 25-23 on a kill by Warren.

Aliyah Sopoaga had an 11 dig 21 assist double-double.

Asiah Sopoaga led the team with 18 digs. Jamie Streit also had double-digit digs with 11 in the match.

Three Bengals had double-digit kills as the Bengals out killed the Thunderbirds 61-48. Reagan Kunz led the team hitting .355 with 15 kills on 31 attacks. Sadie Bluth hit .435 with 13 kills on 23 attacks and Kennedee Tracy had 10 kills.

Warren had a team high .600 attack percentage with seven kills on 10 attacks.

Kaia Rhodes led the team with three blocks.

The Bengals are home Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for senior day as they conclude the season against Northern Arizona.
