POCATELLO, Idaho - The search for Idaho State's next football coach is over.
After a national search, Idaho State Director of Athletics
Pauline Thiros has announced that Charlie Ragle has been named head coach of the Idaho State football program.
"The group of candidates we had the opportunity to consider in this search are exemplary. But, among these very impressive and capable men, Charles Ragle simply shined above. His ability to connect with, serve, and develop players is incredibly compelling. Coach Ragle not only possesses the football expertise to be successful, but he has the intangibles which allow him to effectively share it with our staff and student athletes in a way that will enrich their lives and experience. He is precisely the right person to return Bengal Football to prominence. He believes what I believe about our tremendous potential, and he has the tools to ensure we reach it," said AD Thiros.
A highly respected ten year veteran of Pac-12 coaching staffs, Ragle comes to Idaho State after spending the last five years at Cal as the special teams coordinator and tight end coach. Prior to his time at Cal, Ragle served as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at the University of Arizona from 2012-17.
Coach Ragle said, "Today I achieve a lifelong dream, and there is no better place to start that dream than ISU. With the help of president Satterlee, and
Pauline Thiros I intend to restore the ROAR of ISU football."
Prior to his time at Arizona, Ragle was the head coach at one of the premier high schools in Arizona, Chaparral High School. During that time he accumulated a 63-7 record and achieved a Top 50 nationally ranked program from 2009-2011. His teams won state championships from 2009-2011 and was runner up in 2008. Ragle showed his prowess to enhance his team's program during his time at Chaparral as he managed a booster club that raised $200,000 per season and raised $2,000,000 in facility upgrades.
President Satterlee, who met Ragle earlier this week, said "When I talked with Coach Ragle, I came away from our interaction knowing he was going to be the person to take our Bengal football program to the next level."
Ragle was also the defensive coordinator at Chaparral for one season in 2005 before serving for one campaign as a graduate assistant at Arizona State for a team that played in the 2006 Hawai'i Bowl.
Ragle started his coaching career with a five-year stint (2000-04) as the defensive coordinator at Moon Valley High School in Phoenix highlighted by an unbeaten 14-0 team that won the state 4-A title in his final campaign in 2004.
Ragle was a three-year starting running back and kick returner at Eastern New Mexico before graduating from the school in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and a minor in history. He was a two-time All-State selection at Animas High School as both a running back and safety as well as New Mexico's 100 and 200-meter champion in track and field.
Ragle and his wife, Carrie, have one daughter, Caylee, and one son, Chas.
