Softball Heads to Vegas for 2021 Boyd Gaming Classic Tournament

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State Softball heads to Las Vegas, NV this weekend to participate in the 2021 Boyd Gaming Classic hosted by UNLV. The three-day tournament will feature the softball teams from Idaho State, UNLV, Utah Valley and Seattle U.

Bengal Bites

The Bengals are coming off a tournament sweep of the University of Nevada at the 2021 Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif.

Isabel Cargill leads the Bengals and the Big Sky Conference in Hitting % at .500. During the tournament, Cargill had 5 hits, 1 home run and 6 RBIs. Cargill hit .800 SLG% and .571 ob.

Four Bengals are hitting over .400 on the season; Cargill (.500), Rheanne Lewis (.438), Emma Bordenkecher (.429) and Shea Perkins (.429)

Bengal Pitcher Mareena Ramirez leads the Big Sky Conf with an era of 2.44. Ramirez recorded a complete game shutout against the Nevada Wolfpack and pitched 11 scoreless innings earning a win and a save this past weekend in Stockton.

The Rebels are 7-3 on the 2021 season after hosting the Rebel Kickoff and the UNLV Desert Classic.

Against Big Sky Opponents Southern Utah and Weber State the Rebels are 4-0

UNLV is led by Freshman UTL Janyssa Martin who is hitting .480 on the year with 12 hits and 3 homeruns for 12 RBIs and a .920 SLG%.

The Rebels have three players hitting above .400 so far this season.

Three of the Rebel pitchers have ERAs under four with Charlie Masterson leading the team with a 1.80 ERA and three wins.

Scouting Utah Valley University and History

The Bengals are 20-26 all-time versus the Utah Valley Wolverines. The Bengals are 3-2 in their past five games with the most recent being a double-header win in 2019.

The Wolverines are 4-4 after competing at the Dixie State Classic and a three-game series against Big Sky Southern Utah.

During the Dixie State Classic, UVU picked up an 8-6 win over common opponent Nevada.

The Wolverine hitting is led by Junior Linnah Rebolledo who is hitting .565 on 13 hits, one home run and 9 RBIs.

UVU's Kyla Hardy leads the team in SLG% at .900 off of 20 ABs on the season.

The Wolverine's pitching staff is averaging an 8.12 ERA on the season and are led by Katie Zuniga with a 4.67 ERA over five games.

UVU is coached by Stacy May-Johnson who is in her second season as the Wolverines head coach.

The Bengals are 11-9 all time against the Seattle U Redhawks with ISU holding a 3-7 record in their previous 10 matchups.

The Redhawks are 6-9 on the season after playing in the Kajikawa Classic, The Hillenbrand Invitational and the Wildcat Invitational.

Seattle hitting is led by Senior outfielder Ally Choate who is hitting .370 after 15 games played with 17 hits and five RBIs.

The Redhawk Pitchers are averaging a 4.60 ERA with Stefanie Madrigal leading the team with a 3.39.

Libby Matson Tournament Recap

Day 1

Game 1: ISU 7 – UNR 0
The Bengals defeated the University of Nevada Wolfpack 7-0 claiming their first victory of the season.

ISU put 11 runs on the board in their first outing of the season with three of the 11 being doubles.

The Bengals got on the board early after a single by Emma Bordenkecher to bring in Rheanne Lewis. ISU added another run after Isabel Cargill hit a single to left field bringing Bordenkecher in.

The Bengals grew their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the 5th before Cargill hit the Bengals first homerun of the season, a two-run bomb to give the Bengals a 6-0 lead.

The Bengals would add to their lead after a Frankie Tago double to make the score 7-0 and secure the Bengal victory.

ISU Pitcher Mareena Ramirez pitched a complete seven innings and gave up only four hits and completed the shut-out.  

Game 2: ISU 2 – Pacific 3
The Idaho State Bengals dropped the second game of the Libby Matson Tournament 3-2 to the University of the Pacific.

The Bengals and the Tigers battled back and forth over the beginning of the game. ISU pitcher Emma Montoya pitched a shutout until in the bottom of the 4th Pacific's Lucchetti doubled to left center allowing two runs to score.
A third run was allowed after an interference call was made against the Bengals.

The Bengals didn't give up though. Cargill and Shea Perkins were walked after a single by Mailee Newman to load the bases. Lewis then singled to shortstop and bring in the Bengal on third and make the score 1-3.

The team would add another run when Lewis singled to left field for her 2nd RBI of the afternoon.

The Bengals comeback would fall just short and the game ended with a 3-2 Tiger victory.

Lewis led both teams with 2 hits in four at-bats.

Day 2

Game 1: ISU 4 – Pacific 7
The Bengal softball program fell to the Pacific Tigers 7-4 Saturday afternoon.

The two teams traded a scoreless first inning. In the second, the Bengals would open the scoring after loading the basses on a walk to Hess. Amber Arreola would reach on a fielding error by second base which would allow Mailee Newman to score from third and give the Bengals the 1-0 lead.

Cargill singled to center, sending Arreola home and making the score 2-0 Bengals.

In her second at-bat of the day, Bordenkecher doubled to left field brining in Rheanne Lewis and Kaylee Butterworth to give the Bengals the 4-0 advantage.
The Bengals would hold the lead until the bottom of the 5th when Pacific would hit two consecutive home runs to tie the game at four. The Tigers would then tack on another three runs in the bottom of the 6th to end the game with the 7-4 win.

Bordenkecher led the team with a double and two RBIs. Cargill ended the game with a .667 slg.

The Bengals ended the game with .185 hitting percentage from five hits for four runs.

The team had a quick turnaround before facing the University of Nevada.

Game 2: ISU 12 – Nevada 6
The Bengals took down the Mountain West member Nevada Wolfpack for the second game in a row Saturday 12-6. Four Bengals hit .500 or higher en route to the victory.
Nevada got on the board first, scoring off of a fielder's choice to end the first inning up 1-0.

The Orange and Black didn't waste any time in the 2nd responding. After reaching on an error by Nevada, Angelica Cano advanced to third thanks to a single by Hess. Lewis would then single up the middle brining home Hess and tying the game at 1-1.

The Wolfpack then walked in the second Bengal run, before Bordenkecher hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Butterworth and end the inning with a 3-1 Bengal lead.

The Bengals poured it on in the 3rd, with Cano and Hess scoring off of a Nevada error. Bordenkecher hit another strong single to right field brining home Lewis and Perkins. The Bengals ended the inning with a 7-1 lead.

The Wolfpack didn't give up, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to bring the score to 7-4 and another run in the 4th to cut the Bengal lead to 7-5.
In the 5th, the Bengals extended the lead to 8-5 after Frankie Tago was walked allowing Lewis to score.

The Bengals would put it away with a strong 6th inning. After singling to right Hess would advance to third off of a Butterworth hit up the middle. Cargill would then hit a sac fly to center to bring Hess home.

Bordenkecher, in her last at bat of the tournament, would step up to the plate and put the game away with a three-run homerun over the right-field wall and give the Bengals the 12-6 victory.

Hess and Bordenkecher both hit .750 against the Wolfpack. Bordenkecher led the team with 6 RBIs. Her nine RBIs on the season ranks her 4th in the conference.

Of the nine Bengals that played, eight recorded at least one hit during the game.

Newman and Mareena Ramirez combined for the win with a 6.43 era.
