POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team swept a double header on Friday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium, beating Northern Colorado 6-5 and 10-2 in six innings.
"Fun day today taking two at home with a team effort," Idaho State coach
Cristal Brown said. "Hunting the sweep tomorrow."
The Bengals had 23 hits in the two games.
Rheanne Lewis and
Angelica Cano led the offense by going 4-6 and scoring three runs.
Morgan Hess and
Frankie Tago each had three hits in the doubleheader sweep.
Seven different Bengals had two hits or more. Hess and
Kaylee Butterworth each had three RBI.
Emma McMurray earned the game 1 victory with the complete game. She allowed six hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Mailee Newman earned the victory in game 2 by allowing five hits, two walks and striking out two.
In game 1,
Frankie Tago hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning to lift Idaho State to the 6-5 victory.
The Bengals had 11 hits and committed two errors while Northern Colorado was held to six hits.
Tago, Cano and Lewis each had two hits.
The game was scoreless through three innings. UNC scored a run in the top of the fourth but the Bengals countered with two in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Northern Colorado would score four runs in the top of the fifth to lead 5-2. The Bengals then scored a run in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single by Cano.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lewis led off with a single to field. She later advanced to third. With two outs, Butterworth singled him Lewis and then Tago hit a two-run homer to left-center to give the Bengals the victory.
In game 2, Idaho State fell behind 2-0 after the first inning. The Bengals then scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead.
The scoring started with a leadoff homer by
Angelica Cano.
Shea Perkins then singled to centerfield and
Rheanne Lewis followed with a bunt.
Morgan Hess singled home Perkins on a single to centerfield. Lewis scored the third run on a ground out by
Amber Arreola.
The route continued in the third inning when the Bengals scored six runs. Perkins had a one-out two-RBI double and
Kaylee Butterworth also had a two RBI single in the inning.
Isabel Cargill plated the game-clinching victory with a double to centerfield that scored Hess.
The series concludes Saturday at 12 p.m. Senior
Emma Bordenkecher will be honored prior to the start of the game.
