POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team came out firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon against Snow College, beating them 27-3.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play two games, but the weather had different plans. One lightning delay was announced before the first game and as a result, the game started late. Then in the bottom of the second inning, the umpire called a second lightning delay that lasted for 45 minutes. Because of the time taken for both delays, the decision was made to play one game to 10 innings.
While 27-3 may seem more like a football score, the Bengals softball team crossed home plate at least once in every inning except one. The Bengals had a huge seventh inning bringing nine players across home plate.
"No complaints," Head Coach Alexander Rich said. "This is exactly what we wanted out of the first day."
Several players came up big throughout the game to increase the lead. In the first inning,
Mailee Newman hit one out of the park to score three runs.
Angelica Cano also added a two-run home run in the ninth inning.
"We were aggressive offensively, we played clean defense, and our pitchers threw a ton of strikes and that's all you can ask for," said Rich. "When we do those things well, then things are going to go good."
Rich also explained that it is exciting to watch things worked on in practice, translate to games.
The Bengal softball team hosts Salt Lake Community College in a double header on Sunday, September 26 at 1:30 and 4 p.m. at Miller Ranch Stadium.
