Bengals Win Season Opener, Down Griffins 62-42

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State women's basketball took the court Monday evening for its first regular season game of the year against Westminster College. After 40 minutes, the Bengals emerged victorious with a 62-42 win over the griffins.

Similar to the Bengals exhibition game the previous week, it took some time for the ISU offense to ramp up. The first ten minutes of the game saw both teams go back and forth, with the two squads looking to grab momentum from the other, highlighted by eight lead changes in the first 10 minutes.

With the score tied 10-10, Finley Garnett came up clutch in the paint, grabbing an offensive rebound out of the hands of the Westminster defender and going back up at the glass for the layup and to take a 12-10 lead.

Continuing to battle, with 27 seconds left on the clock, Carsyn Boswell hit a three to extend the Bengal lead to four and end the period 17-13.

The second period continued like the first, with both teams fighting back and forth. At the end of the period with three seconds left, the Bengal veteran Callie Bourne hit a step-back jump shot and the Orange and Black headed into the locker room with a 27-21 lead over the Griffins.

Garnett led the Bengals in the first half, scoring 13 points with six rebounds.

Whatever pep talk the Bengals received in the locker room worked, because a new Bengal squad came out onto the court for the 3rd quarter.

Bourne led the Bengals from the beginning of the period, hitting a three pointer in the first minute to extend the Bengals' lead to seven 32-25.

Seeing the Griffins struggle, the Bengals took advantage and went on the attack.

Five Bengals scored as the team outscored the Griffins 24-12, extending the lead to 18 at the end of the third hit her second three-point FG as ISU took a 51-33 lead into the final period.

The final 10 minutes, Idaho State didn't let up scoring the final 11 points of the game and ending the contest with the 20 point 62-42 victory over the Griffins.
