Newman's Walk Off Home Run Leads Bengals Past Hornets 10-0

POCATELLO, Idaho – Mailee Newman's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth walked off the Bengals 10-0 over Sacramento State Saturday afternoon.

The Bengals (17-16, 1-2 BSC) came into Saturday's game against the Hornets (18-14, 2-1 BSC) after having dropped the first two games of the series yesterday.

The Bengals went into the game knowing they would have to do better against the Hornets ace Marissa Bertuccio if they wanted to pull out a win over the 2nd place team in the Big Sky. The Orange and Black did just that, staring down the Hornet pitching staff and letting its offense take over the game.

The Bengals defense shined in the contest as the Bengals were led by freshman ace pitcher Haley Rainey. In six innings Rainey allowed only three hits and held the Hornets potent offense scoreless, striking out five batters and only throwing one walk in the game.  The Bengal fielders combined for 18 putouts

How It Happened

·        Morgan Hess got the Bengals on the board first in the second inning with her first home run of the 2022 season over the center field wall for a 1-0 lead.

·        After getting hit by a pitch, Gracie Smith pinch ran for Mailee Newman. Morgan Hess knocked in her second RBI of the day, a single to right, scoring smith to put the Bengals up 2-0.

·        Piper Tago hit her first RBI of the day, a single to left field, scoring Hess and upping the Bengal lead to 3-0.

·        In the 4th, Rheanne Lewis hit a solo home run to right field extending the lead to 4-0.

·        With Kaylee Butterworth and Isabel Cargil on base, Lewis singled up the middle scoring both runners and moving the lead to 6-0.

·        Frankie Tago hit an RBI Single after an Angelica Cano Walk scoring Lewis and putting the lead at 7-0.

·        Mailee Newman hit her second walk-off home run of the season, a three run bomb over the left field wall to give the Bengals the 10-0 lead and the win.

Notes

·        This was Haley Rainey's 3rd shutout of the season and 11th complete game.

·        The 10-0 Victory was the Bengal's 4th shutout win of the season.
