POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State softball completed the day one sweep of the Southern Utah Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon in Cedar City, Utah. The Bengals (21-21, 5-6 BSC) started the day with a comeback 6-5 victory and follow it up with a 7-2 win over the Tbirds.
The Orange and Black started the day with a comeback victory over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
After three innings of back-and-forth defensive action between the two teams the Tbirds jumped out to a four-run lead after an offensive explosion in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Bengals went into the top of the fifth the Bengals were facing a 4-0 hole.
Idaho State continued to chip away at the Tbird defense eventually loading the bases. With a chance to put some runs on the board Angelica Cano stepped up to the plate and blasted her first career grand slam over the left field wall tying the game 4-4.
The Bengals continued the momentum In the sixth. Pinch running, Kaylee Butterworth stole second and as the SUU catcher threw to second base, Brook Richards took advantage of the throw and stole home from third, diving across the plate in front of the throw.
Rheanne Lewis then doubled to right-center and brought home Butterworth. At the end of the inning the Bengals had a 6-4 lead over the Tbirds.
Headed into the bottom of the seventh, the Thunderbirds attempted the comeback and were able to score a run, but the Bengal defense held firm and closed out the game with a ground out to complete the comeback 6-5 win.
Cano ended the game with four of the Bengal's five RBIs.
Haley Rainey threw a complete game in the circle for the Bengals allowing five runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
The Bengals came out the gate swinging in game two as they beat the thunderbirds 7-2 to earn the series win.
With runners on first and second, Isabella Hanson hammered a home run over the left field wall to give the Bengals a 3-0 lead.
The Bengals continued the offensive onslaught adding four more runs highlighted by a Piper Tago two rn home run.
Emma McMurray earned the complete game win for the Bengals and headed into sixth only allowed one hit from the Thunderbirds.
The Bengals look to finish the series sweep tomorrow with game three of the series. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
