Bengals Take Down the Beavers Day One in St. George

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State softball split day one of the Trailblazer Tournament in St. George, Utah. The Bengals started the day with a 3-2 win over Oregon State and then were narrowly defeated by the  BYU Cougars 4-3 in game two of the day.

"We competed at a really high-level today and I can't say enough about the job that Mailee and Jordan did today in the circle," remarked Head Coach Andrew Rich postgame.  "Gelly had a huge swing to give us the lead in game 1 against Oregon State. Great to see her come through in the clutch like that. When we clean things up defensively we will be in a great spot."

The Bengals started the day off with a win over Pac-12 member Oregon State.

ISU took an early lead in the second. Morgan Hess and Piper Tago reached. Ava Brown the stepped up to the plate and hammered a single up the middle scoring two RBIS.

The pitchers then battled for the next three innings before OSU was able to tie the game up with a two run homerun.

In the seventh  with the game on the line, Angelica Cano launched a bomb of a homerun to give the Bengals back the lead. The ISU defense then took care of business and the Bengals walked away with the win.

The win is ISU's first over a power-five institution since 2017 and the first over a pac-12 school since 2012-13.

In six innings, Mailee Newman allowed seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts. Jordan Schuring came in as relief in the seventh and closed out the game with a strikeout. Newman picks up her first win of the season.

The second game of the day ended in heartbreak for the Orange and Black. After holding a 3-0 lead on BYU from a Kennedy Dudley home run, the Cougars were able to close the gap and draw a tie headed into the 7th  inning.

In the top of the 7th, BYU was able to score the winning run and close out the game with the 4-3 win over the Bengals.

The Tournament continues tomorrow as the Bengals take on UVU and Utah Tech.
