Pocatello, Idaho – As Idaho State University strives to develop its student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom, the ISU athletics department recently opened the doors to a new Student-Athlete Success Center where all Bengal student-athletes can take care of their studies and receive tutoring assistance.
"We are so pleased to have the support of generous alumni who are making it possible for us to prioritize academic success as well as our performance on the competition field. Student-athletes have limited time, and it is extremely helpful for them to have all of the resources they need in one place. With each semester we are making up ground and providing our Bengals with everything they need to be successful in every aspect of their ISU experience," said Director of Athletics, Pauline Thiros.
Made possible thanks to transformational gifts from longtime ISU benefactor William Spaulding and a second anonymous benefactor. The new space sits inside Turner Housing Complex, allowing for optimal use by all student-athletes due to its proximity to the on-campus dining hall, student housing, and practice facilities. The academic center comes complete with offices for the four athletics academic advisors, as well as a study hall facility, and a multi-functional work space.
In addition to receiving tutoring support, the Bengal athletic academic advisors also assist student-athletes with degree program selection, graduation planning, career development planning, study skills, and learning strategies.
The Bengals are coming off the heels of an outstanding fall semester which saw each of their 13 NCAA Division I teams notch an average GPA of 3.00 or better, and no team was below an average of 3.18. Just a year ago, during the 2022-23 season, the men's basketball team and women's soccer team were recognized as the first ever Big Sky Conference academic champions. This first of its kind award will be given out on an annual basis to the top team academically (as determined using a combined team GPA for the full academic year) in each sport the league sponsors.
Thiros added, "Student-athletes have more on their plates now than ever, and to their credit are performing at the highest level in the classroom. Our leadership team could not be more pleased with the academic numbers they put up this fall. For the largest part this is a result of how remarkable our Bengals are and how much they value their opportunity at Idaho State. I am always so proud of them."
