Idaho State’s Talia Coury Earns Invitation to Mexican U23 National Team Camp

POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State sophomore defender Talia Coury will miss this weekend's regular season finale vs. Weber State for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — representing the Mexican U23 National Team at its international training camp in Finland, running from October 20–29.

During the camp, Mexico will compete in a pair of international friendlies against Denmark and Finland, providing Coury the chance to test herself against elite competition.

Coury's selection marks another milestone in her rapid rise within the Idaho State program. A mainstay in the Bengals' starting lineup, she has started all 16 matches this season, logging over 1,400 minutes while scoring three goals, all of which came in key moments. Through two collegiate seasons, Coury has appeared in 33 matches (23 starts), totaling four goals, eight points, and 13 shots on goal.

Head Coach Dustin Downey said Coury's achievement is a testament to both her ability and character.

"We are absolutely thrilled for Talia and the opportunity she has to play at the international level," Downey said. "This is every young footballer's dream! We will always support our student-athletes who come across these opportunities."

Downey noted that Coury's experience will not only expand her soccer knowledge but also elevate her development for the seasons to come.

"Traveling to Europe and training in a high-level environment will be an amazing experience for Talia," Downey continued. "She'll learn and continue to develop from the exposure to international-level soccer. For this, we are grateful to the Federation of Mexican Football Association to invite Talia to participate in this event."

Downey said he has already spoken with Coury since her arrival abroad and that she is "loving her time at camp."

"As her collegiate coach, I look forward to continuing to support her in her soccer endeavors, and will always work my hardest to help her achieve her dreams of playing soccer at the highest level," Downey said. "I'm very proud of her and all that she's achieved at this young age."

Coury becomes the latest Idaho State player to earn international recognition, following in the footsteps of Bengal legend, María Sánchez, who currently represents the Mexico Women's National Team.

"Talia now joins the likes of former Bengal player Maria Sanchez, who represents Mexico's full national team," Downey added. "I hope we are able to someday put a 'Coury' jersey on the walls here in Davis Fieldhouse right next to Maria Sanchez's."

Coury's development mirrors Idaho State's upward trajectory under Downey, as the Bengals continue to build a program that produces both conference contenders and internationally recognized talent.
