Women's Tennis Falls to BYU 2-5 in Home Opener

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team dropped a 2–5 decision to Brigham Young University on Saturday inside Reed Gym, marking the first-ever time Idaho State has hosted BYU for a women's tennis dual in Pocatello. The Bengals opened the match with a strong doubles showing before the Cougars answered strongly in singles play.

Doubles

Idaho State set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the opening point of the dual. Head coach Gretchen Maloney praised the group's adaptability, noting, "The team played such strong doubles today. We had to make some adjustments with our lineup and they handled that really well and played really smart doubles."

Singles

BYU responded in singles play with wins across the lineup, while Idaho State picked up a hard-fought point in three-set action from Veronika Zarovna in the No. 5 singles match.

  • No. 1 Singles: Millie Day (ISU) fell to Gracie Levelston (BYU), 4–6, 3–6

  • No. 2 Singles: Stefanya Shalakhova (ISU) fell to Kendall Kovick (BYU), 1–6, 4–6

  • No. 3 Singles: Emmy Richards (ISU) fell to Sue Yan Tan (BYU), 2–6, 4–6

  • No. 4 Singles: Sydney Morris (ISU) fell to YuYun Chen (BYU), 0–6, 3–6

  • No. 5 Singles: Veronika Zarovna (ISU) def. Karina Mohamed (BYU), 1–6, 6–3, 10–8

  • No. 6 Singles: Victoria Grymalska (ISU) fell to Bella Lewis (BYU), 2–6, 2–6

Maloney acknowledged the challenge BYU presented in singles play, saying, "Singles we had a lot of good sets but the power and the aggressiveness that BYU plays with was challenging. Really proud of our effort today, and the girls are really learning from every match."
