Bengals Split Day Two in Las Cruces, Power Past Host New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Idaho State split day two of its road swing Saturday at the NM State Softball Complex, falling 10-1 to No. 4 Oklahoma before responding with an 11-7 win over host New Mexico State in the nightcap. The Bengals move to 5-4 on the season.

"That second inning was huge," Head Coach Andrew Rich said. "All five of those runs, I'm pretty sure were with two outs as well."

How It Happened

Oklahoma scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits, three walks, and a hit batter. K. Minor delivered a two-run triple to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Sooners added three runs in the second inning on a three-run home run to make it 7-0.

Idaho State got on the board in the top of the third inning when Ava Brown hit a solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 7-1 at the time.

Oklahoma added two runs in the third on a two-run home run and one run in the fourth on a solo home run to close the scoring at 10-1.

Idaho State recorded two hits in the game. Brown finished 1-for-1 with a home run and a walk. Kennedy Dudley added a single in the fifth inning.

Lizzy Tommasini started and allowed seven earned runs on four hits and three walks in 1.0 inning. Josslin Law entered in relief and threw 3.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Bengal Bites – Game 1

  • Ava Brown went 1-for-1 with a home run and a walk.

Game 2 – Idaho State 11, New Mexico State 7
How It Happened

Idaho State scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Camryn McDonald walked and later scored on an RBI double by Sydney Groves. Jenna Kearns reached on an error, and Kennedy Dudley followed with an RBI single to give Idaho State a 3-0 lead.

New Mexico State answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game 3-3.

Idaho State responded in the second inning with five runs. Alyssa Yee delivered a two-run single, and Jenna Kearns followed with a three-run home run to left field to make it 8-3.

"That second inning was huge," Rich said. "Jenna had a huge swing in that inning, to get that change up and drive it over the left field fence was huge with two outs."

Ava Brown added a two-run home run in the third inning to extend the lead to 10-3.

Idaho State added one run in the fourth inning when Camryn McDonald was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Kennedy Dudley to make it 11-5.

"We knew it was gonna be a high scoring game and a little bit back and forth," Rich said. "So we had to keep adding onto the lead."

Riley Wickum started in the circle and worked 3.0 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk. Kasey Aguinaga entered in relief and threw 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks to earn the win and improve to 4-0.

"We got some really good moments in the circle from Riley and from Casey," Rich said. "Casey was fantastic in relief."

Bengal Bites – Game 2

  • Idaho State scored 11 runs on seven hits.

  • Idaho State scored five runs in the second inning to take an 8-3 lead.

  • Jenna Kearns went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run and three RBI.

  • Ava Brown went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and two RBI.

  • Alyssa Yee went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.

  • Sydney Groves went 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI.

  • Riley Wickum allowed five runs in 3.0 innings.

  • Kasey Aguinaga allowed two runs in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

  • New Mexico State recorded 13 hits and committed five errors.

Idaho State closes the weekend Sunday with a rematch against UTEP.

"You gotta finish weekend strong," Rich said. "We want a good feeling when we get on that plane and we fly back home."
