COACH PIT:
Gem State native Jeff Pitman is widely considered one of the premier strength coaches in all of college football. A master motivator, Coach Pitman has been at the forefront of periodized nutrition and recovery resurgence at Idaho State and was rewarded with a promotion to Assistant Head Coach in 2024 where he will continue to oversee football strength and conditioning, team cultural developmental, while adding pro liaison work to help promote Bengals to the forefront of the professional ranks of football.
With over three decades of work in the weight room, Coach Pit’s humble beginning was in rural Idaho where he was part of a 26-member high school graduating class. He would walk on to Boise State, later earning a scholarship, three varsity letters, and anchored the offensive line as a two-year starter at Center culminating in a 10-4 season in 1990 that saw Boise State reach the NCAA Division I-AA semifinals.
Following his playing career, he immediately went to work in the weight room, working as a GA at Minnesota while obtaining his Master’s Degree, and would attain his first full-time strength and conditioning position at Montana State. Following time at San Jose State University, responsible for strength and speed for all varsity sports, Pitman returned to his alma mater beginning under head coach Dirk Koetter and eventually Dan Hawkins. After helping Coach Hawkins to a 31-game WAC winning streak and four straight WAC titles the duo moved onto the University of Colorado.
A stint at Western Carolina as Head Strength and Conditioning followed, but a former Boise State quarterback and colleague, Bryan Harsin would enlist Pitman's help at Arkansas State. When Coach Harsin departed Arkansas State for Boise State, Coach Pit began his second tenure this time as Director of Football Performance for the Broncos. With five 10-win seasons at Boise State, Coach Harsin was selected as Auburn’s head coach in 2021 and his first hire in the SEC: Jeff Pitman.

At Idaho State, Coach Pit has been instrumental in improving weight room gains. In back squatting alone, the Bengals have gone from 58 players max squatting 400 lbs. in 2023 to 68 in 2024; 15 players over 500 lbs. in 2023 to 34 players in 2024; and only one player over 600 lbs. in 2023 to having three players squat over 600 lbs. in 2024. Overall the Bengals had 100% goal increase of personal records in squats and hang cleans, while 93% players hit their goals in bench press.
Throughout his storied career, Coach Pit has produced numerous NFL draft picks, helping launching over 100 professional football careers, and he holds Level One USA Weightlifting Club Coaching certification and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NCSA) certification. In addition to being a primary catalyst in the expansion of the Jared Allen weight room, Pitman’s greatest contributions have been through increased hydration, recovery, and enhanced nutrition for the Bengals. He is married to his wife, Gina, and they have three adult children: two sons and a daughter.
