Tom Steiner enters his second year as Assistant Athletic Director for Development and Major Gifts. Steiner’s primary responsibility is to serve as primary major gifts officer in support of departmental capital campaign efforts. Steiner manages the ISU letterwinner’s club, “I” Club, and tripled memberships in the first year. Steiner serves as department coordinator with Idaho State booster organization, Football Alumni Team (FAT). Steiner developed a campaign to permanently fund student-athlete scholarships through endowments to ensure long-term success of all 15 sport programs.
Steiner is no stranger to Idaho State as he spent three years (2010-2013) working with the Bengal football program as Director of Football and Video Operations. Steiner was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the football program and served as video coordinator and recruiting coordinator.
A native of Boise, Idaho, Steiner joined Idaho State as defensive graduate assistant in 2010. He served as assistant linebackers coach and was responsible for all opponent break downs and scouting reports. Steiner assisted in coaching the special teams and was a liaison between football and the compliance office.
Prior to Idaho State, Steiner served as a strength/conditioning and defensive assistant with Stanford University from 2008-2010. Steiner assisted the head strength/conditioning coach with implementing injury prevention and performance enhancement program while supporting the defensive and special team’s coaches with administrative and scout team duties. Steiner was responsible for sport-specific drills for ‘skill’ position groups and coached notable current NFL players: Doug Baldwin, Zach Ertz, Coby Fleener, Toby Gerhart, Andrew Luck, Richard Sherman, and Stepfan Taylor. Steiner worked with the Stanford team that played Oklahoma in the 2009 Sun Bowl. Steiner was recognized by Stanford Football and former head coach, Jim Harbaugh, as the 2008 Blue Collar Award recipient for Outstanding Attitude, Work Ethic, and Productivity.
Steiner attended Saint Mary’s College of California (2003-07) where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication. Steiner earned a football scholarship to play wide receiver and punt returner in 2003 before the program was discontinued in 2004. Steiner ended his freshman year and career with 11 receptions, 111 yards (10.1 avg), 1 TD, and returned 3 punts for 25 yards. Steiner earned Most Valuable Receiver award in 2003 voted by the team. While attending Saint Mary’s, Steiner worked as a student assistant strength coach four years (2003-07) supporting the head strength coach with supervision of the facility and day-to-day operation of the strength program.
He received his master's degree in Athletic Administration in the spring of 2012 from Idaho State University. He and his wife Francesca, have two sons, Kingston and Jaxon.
