Andy Ward enters his sixth year as an assistant coach at Idaho State.Ward plays a key role in calling the Bengals offense and scheduling. The Bengals were one of the top offensive teams in the Big Sky Conference during the 2013-14 season, averaging 70.8 points a game and that number jumped to 74.1 for the 2015-16 season. It was the first-time an ISU team has averaged 70 points or more for a season since the 2005-06 team.
The Bengals finished 16-15 season in 2015-16. That mark was the sixth best start since the 1976-77 season and the 11-7 conference record was the best winning percentage since the 2000-01 team finished 10-6.
Two years ago the ISU offense set a school record for 3-pointers made in a season and ISU had its first first-team all-conference player since 2008-09 in Ethan Telfair.
ISU has excelled in the classroom during Ward's time in Pocatello. The team had a 3.0 GPA for the 2014 spring semester and a perfect 1,000 APR score for the 2012-13 academic year. The team also boasted over a 3.0 GPA during the 2014-15 academic year. For the 2017 spring semester the team boasted a program-best 3.36 GPA.
Prior to coming to Idaho State he spent five years as the head men’s basketball coach at Northwest College in Wyoming. He also spent the last two years serving as athletic director.
Ward is no stranger to coach Bill Evans as he played at SUU and was named the team MVP as a senior.
Prior to his time at Northwest, Ward was the head coach at Eastern Wyoming from 2002-07. He guided the Lancers to three regional championship games and two regional titles and in 2004 his team finished eighth at the NJCAA National Tournament.
Ward is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He played at Eastern Wyoming for two years and earned All-American honors in 1992. He then played at SUU for two years under coach Evans and was named team MVP as a senior.
