Jay McMillin enters his eighth season as an assistant coach with Idaho State University. At Idaho State, McMillin coordinates academics, summer camps, post player development, and game scouting, as well as handling recruiting responibilities.
McMillin came to Idaho State with strong ties to the state of Idaho. He's been a coach or staff member at the University of Idaho and Boise State University.
McMillin was an administrative assistant for the Boise State basketball program for one season (1996-97), after spending six years as a member of the University of Idaho coaching staff. He spent three years as a full-time assistant (1993-96), one as a restricted earnings coach (1992-93), and two years as a graduate assistant (1990-92).
He began at Idaho in 1990 as a graduate assistant under Larry Eustachy, and earned a master's degree in Recreation in May of 1992. He was then elevated to full-time status when Joe Cravens was named head coach. While at Idaho, McMillin was involved in recruiting, individual skill development, scouting, academic monitoring, and summer camp coordination.
Idaho won the Big Sky Conference regular season title with an 11-3 record and was 24-8 overall in the 1992-93 season. They qualified for the Big Sky Conference tournament in each of McMillin's six years on the coaching staff.
McMillin spent two seasons at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, where he was an assistant basketball coach. The Panthers were 43-21 during his two years at Ellsworth, including a 25-7 mark in 1988-89.
A native of Utica, Nebraska, McMillin graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1988 with a bachelor of science degree in comprehensive social science and secondary education. McMillin was a two-year letterman in basketball for the Plainsmen under head coach Jerry Schmutte. In his senior year, Nebraska Wesleyan went 24-6 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four, where NWU finished third. His junior season, Nebraska Wesleyan went 21-7, and also qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament.
McMillin was a three-year member of the NWU basketball team, and also played a year of baseball.
He and his wife Alisha have a daughter, Lauren, who is four, and a son, Cooper J., who is one.
